Re: VW re longo2 [moparbad]

Just read this in the Washinton Post Auto section.. from a guy who could have recommened any brand, any model to this readers question... .Looks like VW has a long uphill PR battle ahead......... Arlington, Va.: "We are looking to buy a small "commuter" car (good gas mileage, low maintenance, etc.) and don't have a lot of money. What do you recommend? Warren Brown: Hyundai Elantra. First choice, best value for dollar. Chevrolet Aveo. Second. Good value for dollar. Honda Fit Sport. Third. Excellent quality. Most fun-to-drive. But could be pricey." I think VW Pricing and reliability issues has somehow put it completely out of the minds of such reviewers when thinking of the criteria of this buyers question. VW has now seems to be an 'up-scale' kind of product..a long way from it's roots.. my first VW was a new 1959 Beatle at $1700.00.... my last bug was a new 1971 Super Beatle (I think the best one they ever made) at $1921.00...they are now selling for up to $6,000.00 "Herman" as we called it, would have been a better investement than money in the bank, mind you that's not saying much is it. The U.S. market really needs the "PoloTDI" to get back to reality. Road Test: Volkswagen Polo TDI By Damien Tomlinson - 20/Oct/2006 The Volkswagen Polo is a very small car. It measures less than 4 metres long and only 1.65 metres wide, and competes for market share against similar sized vehicles like the Toyota Yaris, Peugeot 206, Mazda2, Holden Barina and Ford Fiesta. Unlike most of these cars however, the Polo has two very neat tricks up its sleeve. The first is the GTI model, powered by a turbocharged 1.8-litre petrol engine. Feann reviewed this one and gave it an 80% score, which you can read about here. The second neat trick in Volkswagen Australia's Polo range is the TDI model. This cheeky little German car is powered by a 1.9-litre turbo diesel engine, giving the vehicle incredible fuel efficiency figures of 56mpg, an impressive cruising range and plenty of power. And at the time of writing it has no direct competitors. IMHO that's where VW should be again.

Forty boxes? I thought I was bad....of course, had I kept all my old R&T, Motor Trend, C&D, etc. over the years, it'd probably be something like that. I do have quite a few bags (from Chicago Auto Shows) of brochures I've accumulated over the years, and one box and several three-ring binders filled with ads, most of which are stored in the large closet, fka bedroom #3 (opens door, winces, closes door, process to be repeated every three months or so). Then, of course, are the books, CDs, records, clothing I haven't worn or fit in for ten years, the ashtray collection (I've never smoked), dishes, my PeeWee Herman placemats........yeah, I'm a hoarder.
Re: 2004 1.8T GLS 4MOTION PASSAT- Bad Deal [camperman]

I too have had my share of VW's starting with a new 1959 Beetle ending with a 1971 Superbeetle, a yellow car that we called "Herman the German". It was the best of the bunch and is probably still running. I am amazed at the variety of electrical and mechanical issues on this Passat Forum! (my first visit) I have been looking at the 06' Jetta TDI's and thought perhaps the Passat would be just as good or better, but found they stopped making the TDI Passat in 2005. I have also found a much reported weakness in the 2 ltr Passat engines. The engine counterbalance shaft run by a little chain off the oil pump that is prone to break. For several thousand dollars it can be converted to a gear drive for better reliability, if you happen to know a VW engine Guru who will do it. After reading through the last 10 pages of horror stories on this Forum, I am running not walking from anything to do with a Passat.
CAR DEALERS DEFINITELY RIPPING OFF CONSUMERS IN CASH FOR CLUNKERS
by cons123 on Wed Aug 19 19:11:47 PDT 2009
I thought I was the only one who strongly felt this way till I read some postings. Last week, I was about to close a deal for one of the leading Japanese brands from a dealer in a city right beside Los Angeles. At the last minute I was told that all customers with CARS rebate will no longer have any other discounts. Right off, the $2000 additional discount I was supposed to get was gone. I was advised that the policy took effect that very minute. Those with CARS rebate will have the $3500 or $4,500 deducted from the MSRP and are not entitled to their usual discounts from MSRP & get NOTHING MORE. I felt like a big fool. Adding insult to injury, I was told I should proceed with the purchase at that very moment since the supply is getting really tight and that the funds for the CARS program will be gone really fast. For a while I was tempted to ahead. However, I realized that I will not allow myself to be fooled any further. Up to yesterday, I was having second thoughts whether I made the right decision to delay buying a new car until I read entries in this forum and the ABCNEWS online article of 8/18/09 written by CHARLES HERMAN and quote the relevant paragraphs below: "As Cash for Clunkers enters its fourth week, Edmunds.com, a Web site for car buyers and sellers, reports the number of people taking advantage of the program appears to be on the decline. "Now that there is plenty of money in the program and the most eager shoppers have already participated, the sense of urgency is gone, and the pace of intent decline is accelerating," said Edmunds.com CEO Jeremy Anwyl. "Inventories are getting lean and prices are climbing, giving consumers reasons to sit back." Edmunds.com concluded that sales activity last week was down 15 percent from the peak in July." How I wish I could divulge the dealer’s name. However, I think this is not limited to this dealership as the usual ads highlighting the benefits for the CARS program last weekend in the L.A. Times were toned down. Likewise, I called several dealerships and their usual first question was whether I had a clunker. I would just hang up the phone because I knew what was coming. Of course they have all the right to give discounts or not. Don’t these dealers realize that these CARS recipients were the ones that brought them back to life? Now they want to screw the goose that lays the golden eggs. If this is not greed I don’t know what you can call it. Is there a way we can get the truth out there and ask those planning to buy a new car to postpone doing so for a month or so and put these dealers back to where they were a month ago?

Even worse are PT Cruisers! the market is DEAD on these!.." I don't know if anyone recalls "The Munsters". But, the PT Cruiser bears a striking resemblance to one of the sportier cars that Herman drove. Every time I see one of those things the theme song to the Munsters pops into my head.
