Re: May not pay to hold out for 10 grand off [derrickson]

"Scarce" may be too strong a word. Whether supply is dwindling I guess depends a lot on what you are looking for. I don't have access to any special information but I can just tell you what I have observed in the mid south over the last month. The particular vehicle I was looking for black/sand FWD GT with as few options as possible - I saw them vanishing before my eyes. Several of them I inquired about were sold. The ones without a sunroof are for the most part, history. Dealers seem to have a ton of black leather. I had multiple dealers ignore my request for sand leather and try and quote black. I don't think the 41k+ models are moving at all - even now. Other than the oddball Sports from Sutherland, I don't recall hearing a bona-fide account of a CX-9 going for close to 10k off unless it was loaded up with expensive options. If someone is taking on $6000 MSRP in options to get another $1500 off, short of those that REALLY wanted those options... the math is not favorable. If someone out there got 10k of a unit in high demand it would be helpful to hear about it.

How good of a deal you are going to get depends on what configuration of car you want. As the supply is slowly dwindling, sand leather interiors and units without sunroofs are becoming scarce. On the other hand if you want (or will accept) outrageously priced boondoggles such as the navigation system or DVD player, you are going to have folks fighting for your business. Go to the Mazda website and chose build a car. This will allow you to search for dealers who have the color and option combinations you can tolerate. The next step is to contact the dealers and ask them for a price. Create a spreadsheet to keep it all straight as it gets complex comparing cars with different options and it is easy to lose perspective on how good (or bad) a particular deal is. You can search in a 250 mile radius. You can extend this by stating you live in another town and starting the process over. Once the bids start rolling in, don’t be shy about using them against each other, keeping in mind that occasionally multiple dealerships in the same region have the same ownership even though they may not be explicitly branded as such. Some dealers will deliver for free, some will charge a small fee. You can get a car delivered by a third party for between about $350 to $1000, see ebay auto as a starting point for details on how this works. If you are asking for a quote from a dealer you are not willing to travel to, the delivery options need to be part of the initial query or else you are not being fair to that dealer by getting a quote when you are not serious. The larger the dealer, the better your chances are at a great price because the volume credits are complex and have multiple tiers. If you shop properly, the odds of a smaller dealership winning your bid are not good. The people living in the Northeast, and parts of California have a big advantage here (perhaps Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, etc too). I don’t know if anyone had the chance to investigate the interesting autobarn post, unfortunately their stock didn’t match my requirements. I suppose they could have something not listed in their inventory but with some many dealers to talk to and the fact that they were far from me I had to draw the line somewhere. The odds are very slim of getting your best deal on a location, you need to find out who has the car they are trying to trade for and deal with them directly. I have seen several posts of “$10,000 off” but these seem under close investigation that they are either teaser units or other special circumstance. For instance, Sutherland in Atlanta was doing $10,000 off, but this was on a group of oddball Sport models that had leather added. Not to say this wasn’t a tremendous deal, just that it did not apply to the whole lot (Sutherland is still pretty strong on their pricing). As stated before you may hit this number if you are enough of a sucker to pay a couple of g’s for a navigation system that can be smoked by a $250 Garmin. You can try for $10,000, but someone shoot me down if I am wrong, I think $8500 off is a realistic goal for most of us. Be prepared to jump on one at that discount if you really want the car.
Conclusion to my new car problem
by wolfe4 on Mon May 12 04:41:17 PDT 2008
The dealership was excellent, they ordered a new computer and thought that would take care of the problem. They were bringing the car to me and had loaned me a new Malibu to drive in the mean time. My salesperson was driving the car to me and it started doing the same thing again to him. He called me and said he was not going to deliver the car to me because it was acting up again. I called the general manager and he said whatever I wanted to do, get my money back, find another car, just whatever I wanted. I told him I did not want that car and to find me another one or order me another one. Well GM went on strike so they can not order me one so they found one for me. It did not have the upgraded stereo like I wanted but it had everything else. Sutherland Chevrolet in Nicholasville, KY rocks. If you want a true blue friend, buy a car from them.
Re: TV Series Premieres - Winners & Losers [kirstie_h]

I watched the first few minutes of Journeyman, but didn't stay with it. Switched over to something else, but can't remember what now. Must have been really impressive, hunh? I watched Dirty Sexy Money because of Donald Sutherland and Jill Clayburgh. Ugh. I'm not impressed nor intrigued to know what happens to these characters. Chuck - I like it. This one is reminiscent of Jake 2.0, which had a short history, but I liked it as well. I guess I'm a sucker for lovable geeks. Or I should say Nerd. One show I'm really looking forward to is Pushing Daisies. It's creator is the same as Dead Like Me and I loved that series. It ended too soon, but a film sequel is now being shot! So maybe we'll find out if Georgia ever resolved her destiny as a reaper.
TV Series Premieres - Winners & Losers

I've now watched two. My reviews: Journeyman - excellent. I loved Kevin McKidd (lead actor) in the HBO/BBC Rome series, and he's just as good in this. His American accent is not great, but the plotline thus far is intriguing. You wonder how long they can keep it up, but as long as they are willing to change the cast as he changes his past and affects current events, it could be great. Dirty Sexy Money - Twenty minutes into it I hated every character, and despite a quality cast (including Peter Krause & Donald Sutherland), the writing was a turn-off. More critics liked it than not, but I agree with the Washington Post - The facetious drama series -- not quite a comedy, not quite not one -- gathers together an annoying collection of eccentrics and misfits, all of them rich and greedy, few of them worth knowing. Any bets on other series that are likely to survive or tank?
I'm surprised...

...that Ford hasn't tried to get Keifer Sutherland as Jack Bauer to pitch Expeditions or Explorers (the preferred vehicles of the Counter Terrorism Unit on "24"). They already have heavy product placement on the show. But only for the good guys...the terrorists all seem to drive foreign makes. ;) "Whether you're hauling hyperactive kids to soccer practice or transporting an unstable nerve gas canister to a secured area, the Ford Expedition has the space and uncompromising ride you need!" :shades:
