Re: PRE OWNED ML 350 2005 EMISSIONS [koriarroyo]

It sounds like the selling MB dealer didn't bother to do a thorough job or completely skipped the actual MB certification. I would get everything checked over by another competent MB dealer, even if it costs you $ 500 more, ascertain what else is wrong and not within normal readings and get it fixed before the original 4 yrs 50K warranty runs out and also before the one year certified coverage runs out. If it will take more than a day for repairs, ask for a loaner. MB certified vehicles typically cost about $ 2,000 to $ 4,000 more than comparable mileage non-certified identical models. You paid for the extra reliability. You didn't say what your mileage reading, was but since it is a very expensive part to repair, it might also be worth having the transmission checked, if you are over 40K. 45 days before the regular warranty runs out, think about getting an extended service plan if you're going to keep it for at least 3 or 4 yrs. I've already saved more money than it would have cost me for my out-of-warranty work than without the extended coverage.
Tire Dealer Damged My Rims!!!!!
by pscheid on Thu Nov 06 09:37:33 PST 2008
The good news was that I got a great price on a tire package from the largest regional tire distributor in the NE. The bad news is they damaged 3 rims on my 04 Coupe with the performance 18' wheel/tire option. After discussing this with the tire dealership manager, he committed to fixing the issue (scrapes and gouges, no bends or breaks), but with the wheel guy he uses in these instances whom I don't know from Adam. So I decided to get an arms length opinion and dropped by the Infinity Collision shop. The head guy looked at the rims and ironically an insurance adjuster from my auto carrier was there as well. Replacements: $880 each. Refurbished: $350 each. Was told the issue isn't so much the repair, but getting a quality repair that will last AND the rim colors and finish to match the remaining original on the car, tough to do and a commonly known dilemma. After the tire dealer gets a peek at the quote I got....... I now anticipate a war that will drag on if I rightly insist on the Infinity approach versus the tire dealer's rim guy. Has anyone had an issue with either the wheel refinish going South after a repair or a color/finish match? I drive cars cradle to grave, so I need another half dozen years out of the car. And I drive year round in the NE US, complete with road salts. I need to make a decision soon. Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I doubt that Toyota has admitted to a problem. Perhaps they've acknowledged that downshifts are slower on DBW vehicles. You said in a post many months ago that driving style affected downshift crispness. I find that to be the case with my HL and Camry (both with 3.3L and 5 sp auto). Depending on throttle position when a downshift is "requested," sometimes the shift is almost immediate, other times there is a noticeable lag. In 8 years of total driving with these two vehicles, there have only been a handful of instances when I really needed a faster downshift. It's a "problem" that I can live with.
Re: Dunlop or Pirelli ?? for ML-320 2002 [alex_russo]

Very timely question. Dunlop tires on MLs have no mileage warranty. Mine lasted 25000 to 27000 miles, and I had several blowouts in 2 or 3 of those tires so the Dunlops on the vehicle weren't all in the same shape. Two were still good, 1 was OK but starting to go and the last was completely shot. Last week, I finally decided to get all 4 Dunlops replaced with Continental Cross Contact LX. These have a 680 TQ rating with 65K warranty. These cost about $ 800 for everything with install, replacement certificates, taxes and balancing (before modest trade-in discount on the remaining good Dunlop tires). But, these Continental tires should last 5 or 6 years (and hopefully no more blowouts). Continental is running a GPS Navigation unit promotion through 11/02/08 so I'll also be getting a Navigation system in the mail for buying the 4 tires. Buying tires at the dealership means that you'll likely pay more than at every tire store. My tires were purchased from Discount Tires but Tire Rack may also be feasible for you.

Motor Trend did an analysis of hybrids a year or two ago. As I recall, they breakeven point was about 100,000 miles which is 6+ years for most people. Of course, gas was likely closer to $3 than $4 so the results might have been different if the analysis was done last summer. At this time, you buy a hybrid for the good of the planet, not because it saves you money. Btw, I'm impressed with your overall mileage given that the 08 is much larger than my 04. We never break 20 mpg in the city and 23-24 is the best we can do on the highway at 70 mph or less.

1248 mile trip, 880 miles pure highway, the rest mixed city/suburban/highway. Overall 22.3 mpg. The two all highway tanks were 23.4 and 23.6, average speed about 69 mph. The trip computer on the 23.4 highway tank read 25.0, more optimistic than usual.
