Re: Traded 2000 Dakota V8 5 speed Quad cab [bpeebles]
by themacguy on Mon Apr 14 20:38:47 PDT 2008
my quad's miles were put on in just over 4 years. it sits covered now, with maybe a couple hundred miles put on it now and again. i was running about 40k a year, at 120 miles per day to the oilfield and back. my partnership split, which is typical with trust babies (my ex partner) in the oil business these days, so in late 04 i pretty much parked the truck. i usually take the old 89 v6 dodge raider into downtown, or maybe the lincoln ls we bought in late 04 on longer trips. but i've missed the dak, so i'm spending some time in it too now. sure is a nice truck. looks new, runs new, don't even want a new one. heck, i think they're cheaper now than back then!?! and i figured this diesel thing was more well known here than my just talking to a couple of test drivers in ft. stockton at a local truckstop there over the last, about 5-6 months or so... all i really heard was 2.2 liter, bluetech(?) and 'tdi' (i actually asked one of the guys) - for sure those were the exact words, dunno about spelling. also mentioned was 'tdi' and '4-banger' and i'm pretty darned sure these same guys have been out there (on the track) in dodges and mercedes over the last several years - mostly high speed cars and various trucks - i saw one of the first new challengers out there, and it was moving pretty good . don't think i remember anything about veedubs or detroit diesel. i'd remember cummins (see below) or detroit or international, because we're looking at replacing our 95 winnebago elante with a diesel pusher in the next couple of years, so i've been watching those motorhome capable engines for a while now, and i'd know if i'd heard of any of the main diesel companies being out there. lots of cummins ram trucks on the track. oh, and i think there've been some cummins in some ford trucks lately, which is weird enough, and what's up with that? don't quote me, but i'm pretty sure i saw one at lunch with the emblem on the fender and the whole front end was covered in a very large, and very ugly, bra thingy. lots and lots of vettes and vipers and (loud) mustangs there all the time in the hot months. i know a lamborghini, like the one carty beal had loaned out in odessa that crashed at high speed and killed that father/son combo last year, have been running over 200 mph recently, testing some new fangled high speed tire. i think that story even made the news. remember this is primarily a tire testing facility, but it's also used for high speed and long haul testing in desert conditions (very hot and very dry). in the late 70's our san angelo based corvette club ran some laps out there. we also had our original 1976 26' gmc palm beach fwd (455 olds) motorhome up for a commercial back in 1999 for the centennial. they also wanted our orig. chevy 70 1/2 cheyenne super pickup and my 78 silver anniversary vette for the same dealy, but it got canned at the last minute. i'd sold the s/a vette but knew where it was, and we had the other two vehicles stored at the ranch. bummer. anyway, glad all is well with the site. looks like it's really grown in scope. i remember when we had just a few main topics, and we'd all be hanging around at night typing on our 28k and 56k modems like madmen. pretty intense there for a while anyway. i'll sign off now and let somebody else have the bandwidth. will be around some. stay in touch all. jack b :-) in midland, tx usa
Re: 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited [smgolatzki]
by smokebee on Sun Apr 06 13:27:10 PDT 2008
You did not give any stats on the vehicle except milage(this alone discounts the vehicle by about 1200 dollars) Go to Edmunds.com select Jeep, then the year, then limited, next page will say new and used. Look under used section at bottam right--appraise you car. Click and the page will come up for Jeep limited. Select color mileage conditions and options, You will be given--trade in value, private party sale, retail price. Scroll allt he way down for final values. On the seat, best bet would be to get one complete with track from a wrecking yard Good Luck S Swann--Odessa, tx
differential seal
by smokebee on Tue Mar 04 09:49:07 PST 2008
book says to remove rear wheels, brakes and calipers.Drop driveline. Use tools # 6958(holder) C-452 ( Remover) and (Wrench) C-3281 to remove the rear yoke to access the seal. Remove seal with any tool that can pull it out. Use toolsC-3972-A (seal installer and handle C-4171 to install new seal. Use Installer W-162-D, Cup 8109 and Holder 6958 to reinstall the yoke.. The differential housing dips below the lower seal line so there will be oil in the rearend. It is vented so no pressure builds up. The rotation of the ring gear will whip oil upon the diff bearing. The bearing, however will not be submerged in oil as it would be without the leak. Get ready to spend a few bucks!!!!! S Swann-Odessa, tx ( I do not know why the wheels and brakes have to be removed as they are not in the way of seal replacement)
2005 PACIFICA 'LEMON' Touring
by nelsonla on Wed Dec 12 09:00:03 PST 2007
I bought a 2005 Pacifica two years ago and I've had nothing but problems. In the past 4.5 months its been in the shop 3 times = 4months. It has been a nightmare. I've called every number I can find connected to Chrysler to get help. I got the run around where one department sent me to the other. The cars engine was burning too much oil but I didn't know it. I live alone (female) and I am not a mechanic. The dealership replaced many parts (including the rings) costing several thousand dollars. Fortunately I bought a full warranty on top of the warranty that came with the car. Again it began having problems - back to the dealership we go - oil was pouring out of the engine. I took it in and they replace the cam shaft and tried to tell me it was an entirely separte problem. Again it begain having problems- back to the dealership we go - It is now in the shop and the motor has to be replaced. During this ridiculous amount of time the warranty provides for 5 days rental. I WARN anyone buying a car to stay away from Chrysler - RUN FOR YOUR LIFE !!!! Odessa TX Problems: engine sluggish car jerks when changes gears engine light comes on frequently makes rattling noise from engine - sounds like flapping steering is loose steering pulls to the right will jump into over drive for no reason - nearly hit other cars oil pouring from engine rattling noise has grown worse with every visit to dealership stalling over and over problems starting - make several attempts cruise control works off and on, loses speed and kicks in over drive for no reason - dealership continues to claim there is no problem. NOTE: Recent problems, car is at dealership - Just to TRYING and get HELP 1. MAKES THE SAME RATTLING NOISE AS THE 1ST TIME I BROUGHT IT IN FOR REPAIRS 2. KICKS INTO OVER DRIVE WHEN USING CRUISE CONTROL 3. KICKS INTO OVER DRIVE WHEN NOT USING CRUISE CONTROL 4. KICKS INTO OVER DRIVE WHEN SLOWING WITH BRAKES a. HAVE TO SLAM ON BREAKS SEVERAL TIMES 5. USING EXCESSIVE GAS 6. JERKS WHEN CHANGING GEARS I WAS SLOWING AT AN INTERSECTION WITH A CAR IN FRONT OF ME. AS I NEARED THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME MY CAR KICKED INTO OVER DRIVE AND I NEARLY RAN INTO IT. I HAD TO SLAM ON MY BREAKS 2 TIMES TO MAKE IT STOP. I am not blaming the dealership - I blame Chrysler who acts as though it is MY PROBLEM....
Jag or mercedes
by mhalliday on Mon Oct 08 07:50:00 PDT 2007
OK I started looking at a 2008 mercedes C class (very cool car, but in high demand , nad certainly no deals being given) Not wiling to pay full sticker for this I started looking at pre-owned. I was looking at mercedes E-class, and on a whim one day i decided to swing by the jaguar Dealership. I have to say this is more of an emotional stop as I have always had a dream of a jag since reading the "Odessa File" as a kid. I think I pick up an '05 XJ8 -loaded including bluteooht and Nav and Ipod connector - for about $38K (so=und reasonable to you guys?) I like that it is certified. I have to say, i think the Merc is wonderful engineering, but BORING. Just not elegant, or really special looking. So I guess the feedback I was hoping to get from you nice folks was: 1) Am I silly to follow my heart more than my head? 2) shoudl I be worried about the expected sale of jaguar? 3) what do you guys think of the difference in the driving experice between the e-class and the XJ? I am going to dirve the XJ today (I am very excited) so I will have my own opinion soon. Would love any feedback, support or jeers you all want to send my way. This purchase is of course occupying much of my mind these days. Would love some other - perhaps more informed - opinions before I slam down a $40k CHECK ;-) Thanks in advance for any inut! Mike
