OK....I'll jump in....top 5 (bad) vehicles -Hummer.....anything. Looked ridiculous when they came out. Look even more ridiculous now. Go so far to say that when people put custom "wheels" on them, the even look hideous. -Scion XB....for the same price as a well equipped corolla, you get s silly looking "wagon" that sounds course and looks even worse than a vanilla Corolla. The original was "unique". This one looks like the designers dropped an ink blot on the floor and decided to put it into their CAD system as a design. -Smart Car....looks foolish, drives terrible, takes premium fuel, and my lawnmower has less noise, vibration and harshness than the Smart. Every time I see one, I keep expecting a Shriner to exit from it. -Escalade ESV pickup. If you're going to go over the top with a design, go all the way. This one looks like the crusher missed the entire front end, and only chopped off the back end....then put an MSRP sticker on it and shipped it to the dealership. -Mitsubish EVO. I know that this car has a lot of dynamic "goodness". But, how much "boy racer" can you possibly put into a car before it becomes as esthetic joke? The answer....EVO. Just a quick note about the '09 TL. I know I'm in the minority, but I like the redesign. You put the new one, side-by-side to the previous gen, and the old one looks ancient, by comparison. Any car that pulls .83g on the skid pad. And, goes 0-60 in under 7 secs, is hardly overweight, at least not for the amount of power it has. Got to drive one at the formal "unveiling" at my local dealership. Being the former owner of an '04 TL, everything about the new one is better, across the board. Now, I understand that the leftover '08s are being steeply discounted. And, for the money they're currently selling at, they are a bargain. That makes the difference in real world price fairly significant between the old and the new. But, the '09s are starting to be discounted, too. This time next year, the price between the new gen and previous gen will shrink as the discounting should become more aggressive. It would be hard not to seriously consider an '09 if those discounts get generous.
Whirring electronic noises...
by xeye on Mon Nov 17 15:36:47 PST 2008
Hi, This thread made me think of some noises I hear upon inserting the plastic key in my '07 335xi. The engine seems to do: "Oh Boy, OH BOY! Someone put the key in the little slot! I better try to warm up the oil, start this-or-that pump, and get ready to REVVVV!" The whirring, etc, settles down within 2 to 4 seconds, and no bad noises come through. It all sounds normal, and good, from my perspective. I like the idea of the engine anticipating what it will be called to do. This sounds like some proactive thinking on some Munich engineer's part. Now, if only someone could confirm that this is really what is happening, I'd feel better. To me, it would be like having intravenous espresso only seconds after waking up. How nice would THAT be! xeye

What the hell does 'call on the carpet' have to do with anything? Were they miscreants caught vandalizing the boys bathroom? They designed their product lineup intentionally. It was done to keep down costs and market a vehicle to different product segments. If that concept annoys you consider this. They sell the same vehicle to $19000 buyers and to $45000 buyers. It just depends on which level of amenities the buyer wants. This is a problem? No, in fact it's ingenious, it's cost effective and it makes tons of money which BTW is the purpose of this whole exercise. It's a business.

Rocky you keep coming back to a dead monkey. We are in a global economy. No politician is going to bring US back to 1945. When we conquered Japan and Germany we took on the responsibility to bring them into the free market. We now have done the same with many other countries including China your favorite whipping boy. How many US autoworkers have lost their jobs to the Chinese? You seem to think that having 30 years in a business gives you a permanent job. If I had stayed with Pacific Telephone instead of going to Alaska in 1970 I would have gotten riffed in the 1980s like all the rest. Early out with a lousy pension and the need to retrain myself. So how is that any different than today? GM is not doing very well in selling cars people want. They have made a lot of mistakes including tying themselves to open ended retirement contracts. What good will $25 billion do GM? They will piss it away and still not be selling cars. The Volt is not going to make them any money according to Lutz. You keep coming back to the new hires. What about the older UAW workers. Why should they not suffer along with the rest. GM is going broke. If they don't get this gift from all of US, they say they are toast. Where should the cuts take place. Do you have any figures on how much the top executives are making right now? If they were all cut to $0 would it make any difference in the balance sheet? As far as how many billions are going to the crooks on top. It is up to Congress to control that money. They are just paying back their friends and benefactors. Personally I would think that we should bail out the individual mortgages first. If you owe $200k on a home that is now worth $150K, we give you a new loan at a fixed 6% for the realistic appraised amount. Just finding anyone in the banking industry that is honest enough to administer such a program is probably impossible. I fear that bailout will all end up in a black hole. Including any money wasted on the Big 3.

>If you average the new hires wages and benefits I think it's time for the highly paid veterans to give up some pay and benefits to save their industry instead of asking the rest of America to bail out their jobs. Oddly no one was real concerned as 95% of the auto industry jobs left the Dayton area. So I'm not real hot on paying taxes to bailout the rest of the auto industry jobs for those who want to bailout the UAW. Note I don't mind bailing out GM after we've bailed out the financial goofball buddies of the congress to help cover their mistakes. But I don't like bailing out the highly paid veterans with their 100% retirement and 100% healthcare and 100% this and that. Time for concessions, boys.
