Re: Horrible Gas Mileage [iqbaldhillon2]

I can safely say I am not getting 11 MPG. I am averaging 15 -16 in mostly city driving. Note that I am no eager beaver on the gas pedal, and I also have a K&N air filter. I don't honeslty know if that has made the difference, but perhaps it has. My Expy is an 04 Eddie Bauer, 2WD. I have heard that taking it easy with starts, keeping the RPMs below 2,000, and not being the first person TO the stop light helps (i.e., start slow...coast a bit...end up in the same spot as the person who floored it and whizzed past you). I do find I drive more slowly in the Expy than I did with my Passat wagon. And that's a good thing. Good luck.

I think I remember that one...isn't that the movie where Bogart & crew hold up a family in the Leave it to Beaver house? I don't think I've ever had a chance to see it the whole way through, but I'd always seem to catch it midway through when flipping channels, and it would hold my attention. Oh, I did catch the tail-end of "Vertigo" this morning. I guess the trademark car in that movie was Jimmy Stewart's white '56 DeSoto Firedome? I saw the movie in its entirety for the first time late last year, and remembered lots of scenes driving around on the city streets of San Francisco. And the way the movie was restored, most of the scenes looked like they were just shot yesterday! Was that movie originally black and white, though? In some scenes, the color just seems a bit off, but then they used different processes back then, plus I guess it could have to do with the way it was restored.

Our 2002 4cly LE is very sprightly, in my opinion, ESPECIALLY compared to our previous generation 2000 Camry, which really needs to rev to build serious speed. Note that the gas milage on the 4cyl at 23/32 is very good for this type of car as well. We have been averaging around 25MPG, with a decent amount of "city" type driving...slightly better than the aforementioned 2000 Camry, which most recently returned 24.x MPG in a similar mix of driving. Also note that the 4clyinder uses a lower maintenance timing CHAIN, but V6 models come standard with ABS. ~alpha

I last drove the Alcan in early January 1999. It was -38 going through Beaver Creek. No construction anywhere on the Alcan that time of year. I'm not sure when they start gearing up for construction, probably some time in March, although it may still be a little early. The worst stretches of road I remember were around Glenallen and Summit, which won't impact you since you are headed northwest at Tok. When are you heading down? We hit -20 about an hour north of Prince George and didn't get above that until we got past Glenallen. It was actually close to 40 in town, so we had a 60+ degree swing in temp that day. I took the Hudson Hope Loop bypass of Dawson Creek since I had never been that way before. I saw deer standing next to cattle eating from hay bales. If you take that route, be advised that there is one stretch with a 10% grade up and down. Whether you take that route or not, I think you will be very impressed with the engine braking of the V-10. I had my Bigfoot camper on and the truck never tried to push going down hills. Since it was winter, I drove in 4wd with OD locked out much of the time, and I was doing some periodic shifting of my own down into second (auto trans). A long road trip with the camper on was a great way to get a good feel for how the truck/camper combo. The two cities with the best accomodations on the hwy were Fort Nelson and Whitehorse. One of the new hotels in Ft. Nelson has a surprisingly big sports bar to grab a cold one after a long days drive. If the weather cooperates, Fort Nelson to Whitehorse can be done in a full days drive, as can Whitehorse to Fairbanks. If you can time your trip right, Whitehorse and Fort Nelson are the two best places to hit. Lodging is a little tougher to find in between during the winter, but it's there. Keep in mind that, although there are plenty of gas stations along the route, they often operate on reduced hours during the winter. If you plan to drive late into the evening or overnight, make sure to top off the tanks earlier in the evening just in case.

Don't know if the engine "broke in" or the fact that the temps increased 40+ degrees to 20 above this past week, but once the `00 F250 SD CC XLT V8 4X4 SB 4.1 LS hit 1100 miles I noticed a dramatic increase in power and response. About 11 mpg at last fill-up, all city with manual hubs locked in. Storage behind crew cab back seat is "enough". I've got a handy man jack, winter survival gear (sleeping bag, beaver skin gloves and hat, insulated coveralls, stove), spotlight (for those dark night flat tires), and small food stash back there with plenty of room to spare. Dealer: Nye Frontier Ford Wasilla Alaska, Michael Lagg/Randy Frank in Commercial Dept. A little over two months from order (10/7) to delivery (12/15). Second truck from them, highly recommend. DT Red looks great and doen't show dirt nearly as bad as old black F150. Saw 17 SD's on way home from work last night (5 mile trip) with plenty of solid color Lariats. A buddy at work has a new 00 F350 SD 4X4 DRW in Island Blue - awesome color that actually "changes" color in different light conditions. For those of you waiting, keep hanging in there as it is well worth it.
