Re: Likes and Dislikes of your 2009 Forester [amiller1]
by prndldriver on Thu Nov 13 08:13:55 PST 2008
I agree that there's lots of great info here about what people like and don't like about their Forester. I also love reading the reviews, in a different section on Edmunds. Thanks to all the posters! That said, I like the 09 Forester better than I thought I would. It's not as snazzy looking as perhaps the CR-V or the Outlander. But it is much more fun and easier to drive. I like the AWD much better than I had anticipated. I like wide expanse of the windows, the way the tires stick to the pavement while driving in the rain, the back seat configuration, the big 'trunk' area space, the way the interior lights go on when you close the passenger doors. For awhile, I thought the lower front passenger seat was weird, but now we've adjusted all the seats in front. The stereo could be much better. I had the Forester next to a CR-V in a parking lots recently and was surprised to compare that the Forester had much more 'trunk' area. I brought home an 8 ft ladder recently and had no problems fitting it in. :shades: I keep wishing that General Motors had built a car like this with safety features, decent gas mileage, $10,000 cheaper than the Arcadia, and all the other 09 Forester features.

As long as the regular folks who work there are guaranteed their pensions, I really don't care whether the government nationalizes GM or purges management with proven folks and tells the UAW to take a hike. What I do know is if the government does nothing except give GM money to stay afloat, they will only be prolonging inevitable bankruptcy-the equivalent of hooking someone brain dead to a respirator. I do strongly believe the government has no business interfering in competitive free-market business, whether it be banks, automobiles or airlines. Where is the incentive to excel if big brother will always be there for support? PS-Reports I have read indicate the Enclave and Arcadia are near the bottom of the heap regarding reliability. GM has had plenty of chances. It's time for a radical government overhaul or dissolution. Their stock price is on its way to zero.

Apparently, GM moving over the benefits package to Union responsibility and control will not come in sufficient time to help GM. You are indeed correct xrunner !!! With a record low of 12 million vehicles being sold here in the U.S. has damaged everyone including hurting both Toyota and Honda. Next years forcast is expected to be worse !!! Is the wage scale still too high? Are you being serious or sarcastic ??? :confuse: If you are being serious which you might be then one should note that the new hire employees which will be the majority by next year don't remotely make even close to the veterans you read about in the newspaper. Working for GM, isn't a good job anymore and from what I know well their is like 10,000 UAW employees looking for plants to transfer too because there plant is closing. That number is expected to rise due to a possible merger with Chrysler and scaled back production of certain makes and models !!! Most of the vets have taken one of the buy-out packages or if they have enough seniority will retire !!! No pension plan is available for the new hires and the wage scale is a two-tier type.  What about the duplicity, triplicity, etc of costs of having way too many brands/models. I agree the badge engineering is a joke xrunner !! I was at my former employers dealership last week and checked out the Traverse. It's a decent automobile but my gawd it's a rebadged Acadia, but I like the Acadia, design better. They made plenty of this type of crossover thus why add one to Chevrolet ??? Why not make something more along the lines of the VUE for Chevrolet ??? I can see maybe rebadging one or two others but at least make them a lot different. The Enclave, looks different from the Acadia, but the Traverse, Arcadia, Outlook, look way to much a like !!! :confuse: :confuse: :confuse: :confuse: FYI Lemko: My brother purchased a new 08' Impala, from my best friend. She hooked him up with a great deal. $26,565 sticker with GMS and rebates and dealer coupons he was able to get it for like $17,700 + TTL and just loves it. :) If Obama gives GM a billions package, what will they do with it? Just the same old stuff or would they do serious restructuring including jetison of some brands. GM should be required to give a believable/palpable restructuring plan to Obama and his Treasury Secretary before a U.S. check is cut to GM. I'm okay with that xrunner !!! Throwing money at something with no realistic plan will not solve the problem !!! -Rocky
Local dealer

Whilst running errands today at lunch I decided to stop by the local Chevrolet / Pontiac / Buick / GMC / Hummer dealer (what can I say - I live in a small town!). Some random observations: 1. Because of all the brands, there are 3 variations of the Lambda CUV on the lot - Traverse, Enclave and Arcadia. Seems like overkill. 2. Speaking of the Lambdas, I saw one Traverse stickered at $42K and an Enclave at $45K! OMFG! I thought about recommending the Enclave to my sister (who is looking for a 3-row CUV or SUV), but I had no idea they could get that expensive. How much in incentives are available for these things? 3. There was a managers special car parked out front - an untitled 2007 Buick Lacrosse CXL, black with tan interior. 3.6L V6 with the 4-speed auto. MSRP was $32K, but the "sale" price was a low, low $25K. Yeah, right. Makes you wonder what the dealer would offer as the trade in value if Grandma came in with that exact car with 5K on the odometer. That amount plus about 7-10% would be what I would pay for it. 4. I don't think I've ever seen so many fuel efficient cars for sale at this dealer before. Since we're semi-rural, the dealership did most of its business in SUV's and trucks. No more - there were a couple of Aveo's, about 8-10 G5's and Cobalts, a couple of Malibu hybrids and a few HHR's, Vibe's (including a leftover 2008) and 4-cylinder G6's available.

The ratings are primarily for comparison purposes, and are not necessarily accurate. Too many variables to consider to say a car will get x-miles per gallon. According to the govt website fueleconomy.gov, the best mileage ratings (converted to the current measurement system) I could find for a 2000 5-cylinder Volvo was 19 city 26 highway. Conclusively, that would mean that a new, 2009 car rated at 26 mpg highway would achieve mileage approximately equal to your Volvo when driven by the same person in the same conditions. Ergo, a new car rated at 30 mpg should, under the same conditions and techniques, achieve better mileage than your Volvo. FWIW, I had a 1991 Ford Thunderbird 5.0 V8 that got 32 mpg on a drive from OKC to Dallas...

Hey everybody, it's "Lambda," with a "b" in the word, as in "Mary had a (not so) little Lamb-duh." Lambda is a letter of the Greek alphabet, like alpha, delta, etc. Also, it's "Acadia," not "Arcadia." Actually andre regarding recalls, very few are "forced" by the government. Most are implemented by the manufacturers themselves, sometimes with some prodding by the government through defect investigations. But you are correct in that recalls involve safety issues, and failing transmissions generally don't fall into this category.
