I just spec'ed out a 1982 Cimarron, for kicks. Now it has a $12,181 base price. Air conditioning, power steering, an AM/FM stereo, leather wrapped steering wheel, and twin power mirrors were standard. However, by the time I added in all the power stuff, cruise control, an automatic transmission, tape player, tilt wheel, and a sunroof, I come out with $14,103! I wonder what a comparable BMW 3-series would have cost back in 1982? Now, no self-respecting 3-series should have an automatic, so to take the automatic out of the Cimarron and make it comparable, it's at $13,733. I doubt if a 3-series was much more expensive. I guess a Benz C-class would've been up in the stratosphere, though. Cadillac did a much better job of turning a sow's ear into a silk purse, IMO, with the 1975 Cadillac Seville. While it was based on the Chevy Nova, they did a good job at hiding that fact. Plus, at least it had a bit of exclusivity with the standard fuel-injected Olds 350 V-8, something you couldn't get in any other X-car. It was also longer, had a roomier back seat, and was about 700-800 lb heavier than a Nova, so it was much more substantial. I'll have to admit though, that when I've sat in these first-gen Sevilles, I was a bit disappointed. I thought they'd be roomier and more comfy, but I guess being based on the Nova, they could only do so much with the seating position. I think all the extra room actually went into the back seat. I'd probably be happier with a '75 Dodge Dart Special Edition, although looks-wise, they're kinda dumpy compared to a Seville.

Hey GG, you tripped over the same rock I did----GM does not own Hummer. How was I supposed to know? But now I know. This is from the AM General website, corporate history section: "In December 1999, AM General and General Motors Corporation finalized an agreement to jointly pursue product, marketing and distribution opportunities for HUMMER. GM acquired the exclusive ownership of the HUMMER brand name worldwide and the current HUMMER was renamed the HUMMER H1. In 2002, AM General began assembling the HUMMER H2, a new "next generation" sport utility vehicle designed by GM, at a new factory in Mishawaka. GM now has responsibility for marketing and distributing all HUMMERs. Although GM acquired the HUMMER brand, they do not own any part of AM General."

".....What's he saying? That Caterpillar can't make an armored personnel carrier? " What I would take out of it is that a company like that or AM General may not have the capacity to build what is needed for "WW III". Therefore, we would need the manufacturing capacity that these companies offer. GM may not build aircraft engines, but have the space to convert a plant to build them under licence from a GE or Pratt & Whitney.

Not for nothing, but GM doesn't build the military Hummer, AM General does. Now GM does supply the running gear for them. I believe AM General even built the "H1" for GM to sell. GM bought the rights to build the H2 on down.

>It's not General Motors, fault or the UAW's fault that people vote in treasonist politicians that support un free trade after we've seen what it leads too. Did Clinton go for loosening the trade? I don't recall... Who did let the first foreign car plants and builders into the US without substantial tariffs? Which politicians? I was just listening to a roundtable discussion talk show on Chicago AM radio 890 where they were debating what to do about letting the US car companies die? Interesting to hear them talk about Obama and Gettelfinger, etc.

I had a supervisor back in the '90's who had one of those Turbo Trans Ams. Can't remember now if it was an '80 or an '81. He knew I was into old cars, and tried to get me to buy it. He seemed a bit offended that I wasn't interested, and actually had the nerve to get miffed when I bought my '67 Catalina convertible! I guess in his mind, all old cars were alike, so why shouldn't I have bought his? :P I remember him telling me I was going to be sorry, buying something that old, because there were going to be laws coming out that would ban cars like that... It's kinda weird though, to think that all of a sudden, a 1980 car is almost 30 years old! When my supervisor was trying to sell me his Trans Am, it would've only been 13-14. Time marches on too danged fast! Sometimes I think of something like my '57 DeSoto as a 30 year old car, probably because they were about 30 years old when I started wanting one. But all of a sudden, that's a 50+ year old car, and that late 70's crap I go for, which still seems pretty recent to me, is now 30 years old or more.
