What's traffic like? Are you buying this to drive or to race? If you're buying to drive and have a fair amount of traffic, you'll be happier with auto. Remember there's a manu-matic sort of thing so you can shift the gears for yourself if you want, even with an auto. Honestly shifting with a manual is a lot of fun on twisty country roads where there's little or no traffic. It gets old fast if you're in a major urban area with a lot of stop and go driving. With the automatic, you get basically the best of both worlds - or at least 90% of the best, since it's not quite like a true manual.

some people who are just suited to a city life One of my wife's relatives has always lived the city life and never has owned a car. Doesn't even drive period. Lived in San Diego (and got all over the huge county), Oakland, Seattle, etc. Hard to imagine how much wasn't spent over a few decades just on gas, not to mention insurance, repairs, parking and interest. My sister had one of those DC townhouses in Alexandria for a while before she moved way out in the sticks on her acre. She liked it a lot, but likes her rural place too. She does a lot of driving - has to go 1/2 mile just to take out her trash. She's thinking of going back to a condo now, though I can't really see her without a car. She's retired so the high gas prices really cramped her driving. I miss living downtown but my wife likes being out on the edge where we are now better. We'd both love to live in Manhattan for a year, but we aren't ready to liquidate our retirement saving to do so.
ANOTHER DEALER FOLDS
by otto8 on Mon Nov 03 20:28:26 PST 2008
Times are tough for several dealers around Syracuse NY. A local Ford dealer that is part of a large dealer group has folded today. This is the 4th Ford dealer to close in our area this year. Not to mention 4 other domestic brands also. http://www.9wsyr.com/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=706f164f-304c-4110-87a7-97- 7076b91ca4

i don't really like advertising for dealers (the first thing i did was come home and take the dealer license plate frame off, haha!) but it was bill page in falls church. i got a call the morning after the purchase from another dealer out in alexandria i visited saying they would try to give me the car for 22,500 otd but too bad, it was too late.

Exactly my point... The dealer ship has to make money. That is the primary purpose of any business... TO MAKE MONEY FOR ITS OWNERS/SHAREHOLDERS So to offset the cost of: 1) Loaner 2) Nicely decorated waiting area's with 2 to three news papers and non-rag magazine 3) Donuts & Coffee..and sometimes sandwiches for the people who wait 4) Free secure internet connection if you want to work while you wait 5) Nice pay for people who are courtious, have good at what they do, and KNOWLEDGEABLE...and will make customer feel comfertable You have to charge them. As I said earlier that its easier to charge $50.00 for oil change from a person buying 40K then from person who buys $10K car Actually...you missed the point. If they are into making money, then the loaner would be a liability to them. My point was...they amount of money they make with the service department offsets the loss they may take on the loaners. Anyway...go to Alexandria Hyundai and you'll find a big screen tv with Direct TV hooked up to it, customer use computer with internet access, a coffee/tea/hot chocolate machine and plenty of periodicals/magazine (all non-rag) and newspapers for waiting customers to read. The waiting area could be nicer, but I believe they are actually in the process of remodeling...so the jury is out. With the amount that luxury dealers charge for their services...they should be providing the extras. However, you said an oil change for you is $50, which...if they're using conventional oil...you're getting ripped and you should be diving in to all the donuts, sandwhiches and coffee they have to offer. If it's synthetic oil, then you're getting a bargain. As far as nice pay for the techs and such...well, they continue to work there and I'm sure they're qualified to work elsewhere, so the pay must be good. Knowledgeable...depends on what dealership you go to and that has nothing to do with pay, that has everything to do with someone taking pride in their work. If you act like you don't know squat, you get paid squat. When you show yourself to be knowledgeable...you get the extra money, bonuses and awards. Again...it all starts with attitude, change the attitudes and everything else falls into line.
