Shifter is stuck
by ldysportsbuff on Sun Feb 19 12:00:17 PST 2006
My problem started this morning, I went out, started my car, went to put in in gear (1989 Seville, automatic) and the shifter would not move. The button that you push to move into a new gear will not depress. It is solid and stuck. I did try to rock the car a little to perhaps move something. I warmed the car for a long period (it was 1 degree here today) and nothing. Any suggestions as to where I should start? Thanks Donna

marylou18 buying a car that has been in an accident is not always a bad idea but if you plan on trading it in some time it will not be worth that much money what kind of price are they talking about

Picked up my 03 XS 5-speed at close of business today. Subaru fixed it under the 60M powertrain warranty (I have 58,500 on the car... and we've been reviewing the problem since last spring.)   The work took four full days; and basically entailed an engine rebuild, with new cyl liners and new #2 and #4 pistons. The updated pistons have a Teflon coating to help them move more freely while they reach full operating temperature. Don't know if these upgraded pistons are used in the '05 engines...   I cannot say enough about the high quality service at Patriot Subaru in Saco, ME; and their Service Manager Mark Stevens. He is the polar opposite of the awful, despicable service manager at Maine Mall Motors. (I wouldn't go back there on a bet!)   All in all, I was frankly surprised that Subaru did the whole job; and did it as well as they did. I was basically expecting them to say "sucks to be you..." but was excited when the Regional Service Rep immediately authorized the repairs to correct the Piston Slap problem. No arguments, documents or anything else needed.   And one week later - it's all squared away. A great Subaru experience!
Thanks for the Tip

Thank you for the tip about Autozone, and their ability to check engine codes! I think I will avoid my Subaru dealer like the proverbial plague. The more I think of it; the more steamed I get... $130 to switch two plug wires! Why did they leave the other two originals??? Are they expecting another CHECK ENGINE light soon?? ...And another outragious $130 from me to replace them as well?? Patriot Subaru in Saco, Maine will be waiting a LONG TIME before they ever see another dime from me!! I'm paying off this Forester today, in preparation to sell it. If anyone feels confident in a five-speed '03 XS with 53,000 highway miles; with much better tires than the original duds... I'm thinking of a FIRE SALE at about $15,000. Any thoughts?
