Paducah, KY Car Consumer Discussions

97 Legacy outback overheating by girlcarbuilder on Fri Jun 03 07:01:41 PDT 2011

Thanks for all the overheating past posts. I am now using them to troubleshoot a unit in Paducah, KY from Baton Rouge, LA via phone. 288K service miles on it. Man up there replaced thermostat, improvement, but not resolved. Overnighted a radiator up there. Still overheating after a mile or so. He advised bottom hose cool, top is warm/hot. Hmmm, circulation not happening still. Can travel at lower speeds. 35/45mph. Not good for interstate. Now remember, fleet mentality here. Get it on road back to shop. He does not have towing available. Found one post about water pump shaft shearing off, not good news. Pump has 77K of service on it. Also aware of posts about exhaust leaking into cooling system and the purge hole on top of rad. So at this point, recommendation with ambient temps at 80 in morning and 90 plus daytime, pull thermostat totally. Then warm up and observe upper and lower hoses for circulation. If they warm up, then test drive and gradually load it down. Only try A/C if it manages to cool. If it holds, then get it back to shop and purchase OEM stat. Conversation with dealer also revealed that they use only Subaru coolant with a special sealant to prevent smaller head gasket leaks. So there goes the Wal-Mart coolant mentality on Subies. Will update later as this saga contiunes. A response to someone commenting about stats not fluctuating. You are correct when the ambient temps are high, but you will see them do it in colder temps. The time duration is shorter in newer/smaller/passenger models with radiators closely matched to engine size and not for carrying loads. Larger systems like trucks carrying no load you will see longer durations in colder weather. This is why many truckers block air flow off partly in colder weather.

Re: Now this is kinda sad... [andre1969] by omarman on Thu Jun 02 16:42:13 PDT 2011

Sad story yes. Poor 35 y/o Pontiac with a lien, sitting in a West Paducah trailer park and seller wants $3k? Not much loan value on that, so is this a mechanic's lien for unpaid repairs or storage fees? I guess each state has their own rules for the purchase of a vehicle with a lien. Seller decided that he "can not afford to pay to get it back to it's original form..." Also claims the car was given to him by his grandfather! If it's one of those cars which is too expensive to fix even when it's free, then what can it really be worth? I would pass. Even without a lien on the title.

Re: 405 mile tank [fezo] by steve_ on Sat Apr 09 17:46:06 PDT 2011

$3.89 $3.75 $3.65 $3.55 That was regular in the UP, then Illinois, Paducah KY and hit the cheapest here in Chattanooga (although I don't need any more yet). Had another 400+ mile tank. that one got one 25 mpg, all going 5 mph over the speed limit usually.

Re: Bought 2009 LE [bmloveyou] by penyrilehunter on Fri Jun 19 20:38:19 PDT 2009

Bought the car from Micah at Beaman Toyota. I could finance through my credit union at 4.69% 60 months so I did not take the financing and the price included the 2000 rebate. If you buy in TN and have the dealer take care of the TTL, make sure that they figure the tax on the price after the rebate if applicable. Evidently TN charges sales tax on the rebate but KY does not and the TN dealers do not kow this. Make sure when the dealer sends the application for title to your local County Court Clerk that the list the rebate on it. When I did mine the county court clerks office scratched out the trade in value and wrote in rebate amount $2000. I checked with dealers in Hopkinsville, Clarksville, Madisonville, Owensboro, Paducah, Evansville, Bowling Green, and Louisville and Beaman's first offer was 300 to 1200 below everyone elses starting price. I was looking for a 2009 and many dealer were out or had very limited supply of them. If you do buy from Beaman the salesman did mention that one of the other 2009 LE Desert Sand Micah had been in a fender bender and had a fender repainted. Hope this helps

Re: turning radius... [thebigal] by flintlockdave on Wed Apr 16 18:34:08 PDT 2008

We had the shorter wheelbase 1987 version and now own an extended (which became the only size available) 2003 and I have noticed this many time. We just look at each other and say "87." Wonder if there's some way to remove or modify the steering stops to give more steering wheel travel?
