2000 Grand Am SE v6 wont start by corbin_09 on Tue Jul 21 11:36:03 PDT 2009

My problem is like most others here, the car wont start. I'm not sure if its the passlock failing because the security light is on solid when I start it and when its in the ON position. At first, the light used to flash and I would try the resetting method, in which worked briefly. Now, the intermittent cranking problems have drained my brand new battery. I tried boosting it about three weeks ago, and it drove perfectly for three days. However, when I tried the same thing two weeks ago, it fired up without hesitation and just completely powered off about three minutes after I started it. Its not the fuel pump because I replaced that with a brand new one in October of last year, and I'm hearing the fuel pump engage when the car is in the ON position. One more thing: it sometimes shuts completely off while I'm driving, and that's scary! I'm tired of the trial and error fixing with this car. There have been thousands of $$$ spent between the dealership and one-the-side mechanics for the same issues recurring... could someone please help diagnose this problem!!!

Corbin, Yes, but be sure to go to post 599, and print out all the posts mentioned there, and all the photos in the links on post #50. You will probably have to look around to find a mechanic willing to do this mod, since it is electrical, not mechanical. You would probably have more luck going to your local computer geek shop, showing him the stuff, and asking him if he could do it. This is a job that requires electronic knowledge, and the ability to solder. That's why you can't take it to a dealer to have it done. Pontiac dealers know nothing more than "replace parts". They are hired because they don't know how to think. If it's a wiring problem, they replace the wiring harness. If it's the motor, they replace the motor. But then, the same holds true of Honda mechanics too. That's why it's important to obtain a shop manual for your particular car. These are written in such a manner that by following the diagnostic procedures, even an 8th grader could find and replace the right part. The problem is, most people who can read are not mechanics.

Re: HELP!!!!! [tripower1] by corbin_09 on Fri Jul 03 15:15:28 PDT 2009

omg, my grand am is doing the exact same thing.. the security light is on solid. Now my new battery is dead(thanks to the 10 min thing I had to do several times). A brand new starter and fuel pump have been put on there and it was only a short time b4 the problem was there again, but if you have the solution to this recurring problem that wont allow my car to start, please email me at dariusward27@yahoo.com

when I signal a left turn in my 1999 Wrangler the odometer and radio frequency display blink in unison... Which takes me back to Audis...my second one would turn the brights on whenever I signaled right. How is your ST doing? Very nice...up to a whopping 6500 miles now. Just put a Corbin on it last week and took it for a longer ride last Saturday. Nice improvement... How is the Speedy treating you?
