Facts are facts. Whether they reach that goal or not, they (and the EU) have set a higher standard than the US. Why is that? drum roll ... follow the money. And I don't mean the pittance that Mr. Gore is bringing in. Detroit keeps building dinosaurs, the chicken tax keeps Chevy Luv type trucks from Thailand out, and the rest of us pay at the pump. You must be having an awful time in Hawaii - is it raining non-stop or something? I hope you at least have a laptop out on the lanai. Not that we don't enjoy your company, but dude, surf's up. :D
If it is any consolation, there is snow on Mauna Kea at about the 13,000 foot level. We drove up to about 4000 foot and it was a chilly 70 degrees brrrrr. 85 in Hilo today with very little wind. The trades are coming back now and it is a very nice 70 degrees on the lanai where I am typing this. A midsized diesel quadcab or SUV would be perfect for over here.
It's too bad about the court injunction cause you could've experienced the new Superferry. Maui as a whole is a nice place to visit and has excellent golf courses. That is if you golf. Just don't be taking any catamaran rides to Kahoolawe. Lanai is ok tho.
Very few sandy beaches on the Big Island, but on one trip I did manage to find a small beach that was sensational, and the waves were perfect that day. I lived in Hilo on the Big Island for almost a year, and then Honolulu for another 2.5 yrs. I lived in the only condo high rise in Hilo at the time, located right on the edge of the Island. I could walk out onto the lanai and throw a rock into the Pacific. But the first time we had an earthquake and the building started moving, I nearly died! Scared the crap out of me... but got used to it in time. The Big Island has some very interesting beaches... green sand, black sand and white sandy beaches, and a few nude beached as well. You have to know where they are. Honolulu was a lot of fun as well (away from the tourist traps). I owned a motorcycle at the time and would get up early, through my camera in a bag and ride the entire Island. Man those were the days! I too was ready to leave when I did. I enjoy visiting, but doubt I would ever want to live there again. Island life is something everyone should experience once in their lives, then when it is time to get serious again make it back to the mainland and enjoy an organized society again (LOL).
