Dang, rb, I envy you that house - and the car..... We are at our last night in Washington. Yesterday we managed to run into Claire's Chinese cousin and today we spent a couple of hours with the family at the Air and Space Museum and the two dads took the more adventurous kids on an F-18 simulator which was a load of fun. The other family did things in the reverse order that we did and as a result on their way to the Lincoln Memorial saw the President going across to lay a wreath. We missed that. We did hit the Mall later and got the Lincoln Memorial up close. Holy smokes. Didn't get to give the WWII Memorial the time it deserves but it is very well done. It was almost dark when we got to the Wall and I looked up the only guy I personally knew who was killed in Vietnam. I was just coming into Boy Scouts at 11 when he was moving on at 14. Had discovered girls. He only got seven months out of high school and was gone. We then walked up to the White House and at that point had walked enough for several days so we got a cab to where the car was (the driver confirmed jmonroe's theory of Washington driving) and are now back in the hotel. We head home tomorrow. Riding over to Lewes, DE and take the ferry back home.
i wasn't really trying to run down NJ. Driving anywhere in the North East corridor is about when you do it, as in what time of day. Off hours, you can make great time. I have been to Delaware many times and have always want to take the ferry from Lewes, but I am always in too much of a hurry.
Tennis? Not football? And you call yourself a Texan..... I'll second all the Niagara Falls recommendations. You want to do the Maid of the Mists and the tunnels. There's some other neat things there - floral clock, butterflies, etc. You could spend a good amount of time just hanging out at the horseshoe falls. Spectacular. Try to forget all this water is coming from Lake Erie. I assume Clifton Street still looks like a New Jersey Boardwalk. Richard - here's a good idea for an alternate route to Boston that will take you completely around NYC. First, take the coastal route once you get in the Norfolk area. Go up 13, cross the Chesapeake on the bridge tunnel ($12 - and they take EZPass. Head up to Lewes, DE and take the Cape May Lewes ferry. You'd really like a day or two in Cape May but if you skip just pick up the Garden State Parkway from exit zero and stay on it all the way to the north end at route 287 east. If you got that EZ Pass you never have to stop on the Parkway. Take 287 over the Tappan Zee Bridge and continue to route 684 north. Take that to 84 east which takes you diagonally across Connecticut. Try to avoid Hartford at rush hour. You'll connect right into the Mass Pike and head straight into Boston. If you really want some fun we'll give you an alternate route that takes in Niagara Falls. That will take a few more days....
Family trip to Ocean City, MD, from Northern, NJ. Almost made it back and forth on 1 tank, as we traveled 454 miles before filling up again on the return trip not too far from home (it's a 2011 Outback Premium with moonroof, AWP, and various accessories that had a little under 550 total miles, so I didn't want to have the fuel light go on so soon in its life). These 454 miles included some slow driving up and down the strip, idling and more slow driving near the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, and I filled it with a hair over 16 gallons, for a total of 28.4 mpg. Not bad at all. We came from a 2004 Odyssey which was good on gas, especially for its size, but not this good. BTW: car never felt underpowered on the highway ldl20
jmhills, Did the dealer quote the 19,500 payoff amount? If so, I would be very careful. Is the 19,500 the actual trade-in value or is it the amount owed under your current lease? You need to differentiate between the two and determine the following if you haven't already done so... (1) The trade-in value (2) The early temination liability charge. Your lease agreement describes how this is computed. It also describes how the adjusted lease balance is computed. Basically, your total early termination liability is the present value of the remaining payments discounted at the implicit lease rate plus an early termination fee. You may want to request an early termination letter from the fund provider reflecting your early term liability charges. Nevertheless, all calculations should be verified as fund providers do make mistakes. The difference, (1) - (2,) represents the amount of positive or negative equity given that (1) exceeds (2) or (2) exceeds (1), respectively. The calculations can easily be done on a calculator with financial functions or an EXCEL spreadsheet. I don't know which state you're located, but the full 19,500 trade-in value would be deducted from the sell price to determine the tax basis of your new leased or purchased vehicle. You may end up with $0 tax liability if you're leasing. If any positive equity exists, you could take it in cash or use it to reduce the gross cap cost or selling price of your new lew lease or purchase. Hope this helps. John
