Re: BMW F30 [shipo] by nyccarguy on Thu Jan 05 20:05:00 PST 2012

shipo: My Aunt & Uncle live in Southern, NH (Salem), very close to you. You also know I have a tremendous amount of respect for your opinion and vast knowledge, especially when it comes to all things automotive. You guys get some serious snow. Much more than we do here in Stamford, CT. I've lived in NY all my life (Rockland, Ithaca, Manhattan, Westchester) and much like MA & NH, they plow & salt. Early and often. I thought the weather here in Stamford would be exactly the same as in Southern Westchester (Hartsdale, White Plains) where I had moved from. I was very much mistaken. Now I will admit that we had a "bad winter" last year as far as snowfall goes. Here in Stamford, I live off The Merrit Parkway and many people have well water, so they DO NOT salt the roads. They also don't send the plows out like they do in NY. I've got to be at work at 7:30 AM. That means leaving at 6:30 on normal days and between 6:00 & 6:15 when it snows. Last year I saw a few times that they had done a few passes on The Merrit, but didn't plow the entrance/exit ramps. I actually followed a plow on the the parkway thinking I'd be able to get off at the next exit and turn around. Well, I had to drive 10 miles North to Norwalk before I could turn around and come back south. This was all in my 2001 Honda Prelude equipped with a set of Michelin Pilot Arctic Alpin winter tires. I think AWD with a set of 4 snow tires would have helped me plow through some of those unplowed on ramps and made my life easier. For years I thought AWD/4WD was not needed in the "tri-state" area. That RWD and a set of winter tires would be all my whatever bmw I was building online would need. AWD adds weight & cost. It hampers fuel economy & performance for the other 355 days a year that it doesn't snow. AWD helps you start, but the added weight can be your enemy trying to swerve around something and increased your stopping distance. After spending 1 (bad) winter here in Stamford (southwestern CT for those who are unfamiliar with the area), my tune has changed. I equip my FWD Acura TSX with 4 Michelin Pilot Arctic Alpin winter tires. My next car will hopefully be a BMW. I'd love an X1 (gas or diesel), a CPO X3 (N55 Turbo), or an F30 328i w/ X drive.

2011 Nissan Altama by jerry166 on Fri Jul 22 23:01:24 PDT 2011

Car_Man I need your advise! I'm currently in a lease for a 2009 Nissan Altame with 32,000 miles on it, I have 12 months remaining on a three yr lease. My current payments are $333.a month ( therefore 3,996. remains to be paid !) I went to a dealership in Rockland NY today>they offered me a 2011 Nissan Altama Sedan, 2.5 SL package w/ Primium Audio Package, 39 months, 15K mileage, first mo. payment and DVM fees, and $359. a month for 38 months. I could live with the 2009 for another 12 months but for $27. more a month I'll have a new car, all be it for another 38 months! I would be grateful for any advise! Thanks Car_man

Re: 2011 Honda Crv - good deal? [packer3] by nissanman42 on Wed Apr 27 10:47:11 PDT 2011

Here is my thought on this. The CRV EX-L WITH navigation is listed for $30,675.00. The residual from what I understand is 60% on this trim line ($18,405.00). I am not sure what the exact MF is here but its def under 2%. If you do a 36 month lease with 12k a year, your monthly payment with no Cap Cost Reduction (no money down) should be around $270 per month based on the lease formula. What is due to the dealer is: First months payment, sales tax in advance, Doc, DMV fees/Tire Fee, Acq fee plus tax. So basically, you have to pay the dealer (at least here in NYC area-Long Island, Westchester, Rockland) around $1930-$1980 to drive the car away. You are still not "paying any money down" here since there is no cap cost reduction. If the Gross Cap cost of the car is $27,600-$28k-in that range, your payment should be in the $270 range. If I am missing something in my calculation, feel free to chime in.

Homework, Learning, & Public Schools by nyccarguy on Thu Mar 31 13:33:23 PDT 2011

She is sooo ready for high school to be over though - The amount of pressure, work, and stress put on today's students is INSANE. My wife and I recently saw a movie entitled "The Race to Nowhere" that documents students' bouts with anxiety, depression, & how they are just plain burnt out. Google "Race to Nowhere." Very interesting. One thing brought up in the film is how High School used to prepare students for college, now it just prepares students for their college application. My older son will be starting kindergarten in the fall. We just had a meeting with his pre-school teachers who basically told us that "Kindergarten is the new 1st Grade." Much less play time & more school work. He will be attending public school. If it were not for the incredible help of my Mom & wife's Mom, we couldn't make it. Her Mom drives from Long Island to Connecticut every Monday to watch my boys so my wife can work. My Mom drives from Rockland County, NY to Connecticut every Thursday for the same reason. The rides themselves aren't bad at normal times (45 minutes to my parents, 55 minutes to hers), but during rush hour it takes them 1.5 to 2 hours depending on weather & traffic.
