Sales Stories - Fictional

I mentioned a while back a new show on TNT called "Men of a Certain Age" and that one of the primary characters is a salesman at a Chevy dealership. If you've Tivo'd (or otherwise saved) the show, please stop reading this post now as I'm going to summarize the episode that aired tonight I think the salesman who frequent this forum might get a kick out of it. . , . . . . . Father and daughter enter the dealership and our character greets them. They spot a used Solstice with a sticker price of $18,500. Dad says that daughter has saved $10K and, because she was on honor roll, Mom and Dad would kick in another $5K towards a car. Salesman check with SM, who says they are into the car for $13,400 and could get $17,500 all day long. Dad and daughter are down. Daughter begins to cry, which causes Dad agrees to the higher price. Salesman gets a conscience attack, and starts selling cars for a price that the customer writes down (I'm guessing invoice or close to it). Word of mouth allows our intrepid salesman to be #1 for the month - and then he opens the envelope containing the paycheck. Husband comes home and gives wife (who, BTW, encouraged him to attempt this new approach) the envelope. As she reviews the dismal payday, he comments that, starting the following Monday, he's going to start making young girls cry again. Classic - I guess you can't make it up in volume. Lots of literary license taken, but enjoyable nonetheless.

When you first posted about the Park Avenue, I told myself that you're gonna get it. Congratulations on the new ride. Sounds like a real cherry of a car. Hope it brings you many years of use, pleasure and enjoyment.

Not sure how many of you watch TV on a regular basis, but there is a new show on TNT called 'Men of a Certain Age', which chronicles three men in their mid to late 40's. One of the primary characters is a car salesman at a Chevy dealership, owned by his father. Three scenes that struck me: 1) Character is late for the 8:30AM sales meeting and is locked out of the conference room 2) Character has trouble closing an older couple, and is 'replaced' with a younger salesman 3) At the end of the first episode last week, the character literally knocks down the younger associate (same one from (2) above) to get an 'up' on a couple who are eyeballing a Corvette Will be interesting how much of the life of a car salesman they will document as the season unfolds.

But, I'm really trying to force myself to stay from Intrepids...if nothing else, just so I can experience something new. I hear you .. in a previous wife-time, when I lived in California, we bought a '91 Protege. Nice car, decent pickup. It was dark blue and an automatic - wife's choices. Not many months later, it was time for me to get a new car .. we found another Protege - similar trim level, except this one was light blue and a stick. I passed, thinking that I didn't want two of the same car in the family. Bought a '91 Sentra SE instead - a couple thousand cheaper than the Protege, but not nearly as well equipped. If you can find an Aura with the 4-cyl and 6-speed auto, I think that would make a good commute / road trip car. I think that combo gets 33 MPG highway, which is better than the AltiCamCord triplets. Plenty roomy, too. God knows I've sat in enough of them over the years as I was getting my Saturns worked on at the dealership. I was focused more on the XR with the 3.6L V6, however.

I have a feeling that if I bought one of those GXP's, then given the comparative rarity, I'd try too hard to hold onto it and preserve it, and I'd feel a tremendous loss if something happened to it. Whereas something like a used Aura or even a brand-new 4-cyl Altima wouldn't elicit quite the same emotion. I guess that makes sense? It does make sense. If the 'Trep was the only car in your fleet, I can see getting something that's fast, unique and holds your interest. However, you've got plenty of "fun" cars - the Catalina and the DeSoto, specifically. So, whatever you get to replace the 'Trep - be it new or used - doesn't need to make that same emotional connection with you. Hence, a used Aura or Altima. In other words, an appliance. Hope you're able to get out and try a few of them on. Am interested in what you end up getting. I'm pushing for the Aura, so that there will be at least one other regular poster who owns a Saturn!
