Beware sleazy dealers

I just wanted everyone to beware of unethical dealers. I went down to Philadelphia to get my highlander that I had a written (e-mailed) offer of $34,853 for. Four other dealers had agreed to match the price, but we felt that since we had dealt with this dealer first, we'd buy it from him. We had our checkbook, all our paperwork and when we sat down to write the check he asked for $350.00 more. He said that management felt they wouldn't be able to make a profit at the price they had originally offered us. Before he exploded this bomb over us, he showed us our soon to be new car, all glossy and clean. We were furious and walked out. This was on November 27th. I called the second dealer and the next day bought my car at that dealer, Gault Toyota in Binghamton, NY for the agreed upon $34,853. Stay away from Sloan Toyota in Glen Side, PA. They are unethical. I bought a '10 Highlander Ltd with Pkg #7. MSRP $38,040, purchase price $34,853.
As for Japanese reliability...

Two and one-half years ago I bought a Mazdaspeed 3 because I thought it might be fun to try some thing different. Here's my experience: Blown LF strut at 25,000 miles. That cost me a week of instructing at Watkins Glen. Smoking turbo at 26,000 miles. The turbo was replaced, but now Mazda claims that the smoking is actually caused by an inadequate PCV system. Five months ago they promised that a PCV revised system would be available in 90 days. Now Mazda is saying the fix won't be ready until March at the earliest. Variable Valve Timing Actuator became noisy at 46,000 miles. Replaced per TSB. At 51,000 miles the car is now throwing a P0401 fault code(EGR flow insufficient) on a regular basis. This repair-$600-will be on my nickel as it seems that the EGR system is not covered by either the powertrain or the 49 state emissions warranty. Oh yeah, I also suspect that the remaining three shocks are also packing it in as I'm starting to hear some loud knocks from the rear suspension. Yep, I'm sure glad I didn't buy another BMW...

I know you told us somewhere but why do you not like the Mazda? Curious minds want to know. Blown LF strut at @25,000 miles. That cost me a week of instructing at Watkins Glen. Smoking turbo at @26,000 miles. The turbo was replaced, but now Mazda claims that the smoking is actually caused by an inadequate PCV system. Five months ago they promised that a PCV revised system would be available in 90 days. Now Mazda is saying the fix won't be ready until March at the earliest. Variable Valve Timing Actuator became noisy at @46,000 miles. Replaced per TSB. At 51,000 miles the car is throwing a P0401 fault code(EGR flow insufficient) on a regular basis. This repair-@$600-will be on my nickel as it seems that the EGR system is not covered by either the powertrain or the 49 state emissions warranty. Oh yeah, I also suspect that the remaining three shocks are also packing it in as I'm starting to hear some loud knocks from the rear suspension. The car is only moderately quick, and it is much more composed serving as a grocery-getter as opposed to being used as a backroad bomber and/or track toy. My dealer has been great, but is located 110 miles away. The two local dealers have abysmal sales, parts, and service departments. The thing is, Mazda hypes the Mazdaspeed cars as being very special machines-budget versions of BMW M cars if you will-so I'm not inclined to give the car's foibles a pass. As it stands now, I'm using it as a family transport and as an occasional auto parts/garbage hauler(the cargo area easily swallows a couple dozen grimy gallon jugs of used oil), and with all-seasons the MS3 also makes a passable winter beater. That said, this entire fiasco is 100% my fault; I should have known that there is no way that you can buy a competent dual-purpose new car for $25,000.

This was for a FWD. I got two places that agreed to that price - Brown's Honda of Glen Burnie (MD) and Schaefer & Stromingher in Fallston, md. Meanwhile, I decided the '10's were such a great deal that I went for a '10 - EX-L, FWD. My final price was $24837 plus tax and tags at Browns Honda of Glen Burnie.
