Radios and mileage

This morning my other half filled up the Sport and figured we got well over 21 mpg on the last tank. However, don't take this one too seriously - we drove from the house (about 6,000 feet) to work (sea level), then up to 4,000 feet (Lebec) where we found a landslide had blocked the one road into our area. After spending an hour eating dinner we gave up and drove back "down the hill" to spend the night at friends (about 1500 feet) and then on to work (sea level - total distance 226 miles), for significantly more downhill driving than uphill driving. Sure wish I could count on that figure all the time! This confirms what we had always thought, the Sport does get about 2 mpg more than the Unlimited. Now we're thinking about adding the sport bar and a new radio - it isn't all that much to add a third unit to our XM account, and my other half hates having wires that have to detached and re-attached all the time. He knows I'm not about to give up listening to the Roady at the office. And if we don't get a top of the line head unit, I think we could do it for about what we spent on the Unlimited's Alpine head that had the XM tuner built in. Does anyone have any thoughts about where to mount an XM tuner, now that the new ones seem to be much smaller than the old ones? I was thinking that there might be room behind the dash, rather than mounting one under the seat (the Sport has been known to leak but not recently).
Re: Jeep Gas Mileage [embeeduece]

"...'cause I'm only paying $2.60 a gallon in gas." Ouch! Mike - have you ever thought you live on the wrong side of the hill? I can fill up in Lebec at $2.35 before heading down the hill to the land of your $2.60 gas. Last time we went to Costco in Bakersfield, the gas was $2.32. I don't even bother looking at the prices of gas in West L.A. around work any more. By the way, a while ago there was discussion of range. I don't really know the true range, because we stop every day to get gas. Because we live in a high hazard area, we never leave the cars parked at the house with less than a quarter tank of gas. With a daily commute of 150 miles, and such a difference in gas prices, it's better for us to top off every morning.

I don't know if this counts, since it wasn't my car, but my sister who owns a Prius came to visit me. She had no problems driving up the Grapevine from Bakersfield to Lebec/Frazier Park, then higher to our mountain home.

I hear ya about the joys of paying off Thelma Jane. I couldn't believe how good it felt when we sent in the last payment on my Noble Black Steed and then even better to actually receive the pink slip! Well, I can't call it a pink slip any more - California has changed their titles so they are multi colored - no longer just pink. gman - I don't know what time you are planning on leaving tomorrow, but you should be OK coming up the Grapevine. Check the CHP web site before you leave (the CHP office in Lebec is under Bakersfield). Be careful and take it easy around Gorman!
mileage

I KNOW that higher speeds kills your gas mileage! Mine has always done that - so tsjay, if you slow down a bit you will gain at the pumps - maybe not as much as you used to get, but some. When gas was around 1.80 a gallon I used to think "3 cents a mile, 3 cents a mile" whenever I drove to Vegas going 65 and got buffetted by the winds of those Excursions and Suburbans wizzing past at 85 and 90! Since gas is getting up there again (it was $1.67 in West LA yesterday, and $1.51 in Lebec this morning) I'm starting to think in those terms again.
