Re: 2004 ls climate control [bigyunk]
by jokersmith on Thu Dec 03 07:24:00 PST 2009
MY '05 was doing the same thing, the temp would never change. I took it to the dealer and it ended up being a water diverter valve that had gone bad. Once it was replaced it worked fine, luckily I was still under warranty. With the amount of issues I have had with this car I am seriously thinking of getting the extended warranty from the dealer for $1200 for an additional 3 years of coverage.
Re: Honda Civic Hybrid IMA Problem [Ogre_GEV]
by sholmes717 on Thu Dec 03 06:22:02 PST 2009
Orge_GEV - Thanks for providing such detailed & solid information. I have to say though, in regards to your getting 52 & 63 MPG, those #'s are not realistic across the board. I too can also get 50-60 MPG in my 06 HCH but that is with optimal conditions (outside temp between 70-80 degrees, flat terrain, driving about 30 mph, etc). I also have an 01 Nissan Pathfinder that if I drive it like a "Hypermiler" I will also get 20-30% better fuel economy....as will anyone driving almost any car if they drove it differently. But driving like a "hypermiler" is a job in itself & most people already have a full time job in this life & thus don't want another one. The reality is that unless you drive like a hypermiler (which it's probably safe to say that most HCH owners probably don't even know how to drive this way as it takes a good deal of effort) the majority of owners will see city MPG closer to 42-44 & HWY MPG of 38-41. My current 06 HCH was my first hybrid purchase & it will be my last. My father-in-law purchased an 08 VW Jetta TDI & all I can say is WOW! Of course I'm doing more HWY driving these days so the TDI makes a good deal more sense given it has 240 lbs of torque, is a diesel that will go for 300k miles without blinking or needing a new $3k battery pack every 80-100k, & gets 38 MPG overall. I know VW has had some reliabilty issues but the new TDI's are rated very high. And you have to appreciate a car who's initial MPG estimates were 29/40 & owners have always consistantly been getting higher averages (new ratings went up to 30/42). Unlike the HCH which when I purchased it had ratings of 51/49 MPG... which is a joke as the new 40/45 is quite a bit more realistic overall. And not to mention the lack of power when using cruise control produces 5,000-5,500 RPM's to get uphills. Since most HCH owners do city driving, they don't ever have to engage their cruise control to experience this design flaw. But this is a MAJOR design flaw & deal breaker for me. Having to listen to such high, mind numbing RPM sound is not ok...not to mention the long term effects this will have on the engine (premature engine failure for sure). The HCH is not a car for anyone who does any amount of HWY driving. CITY driving ONLY & this car can make sense for people in major metro areas like NYC, Boston, etc where CITY driving is all you will ever do. Otherwise, buy one of the many regular gasoline cars that get decent gas mileage...cause the Hybrid simply isn't worth the added expense on the lot, battery replacement, & hassle. A Hybrid will not save you money after it's all said and done....you will get to drive around in an under powered civic with a "Hybrid" badge on the back though!!!!!
Grill block
by circuitsmith on Wed Dec 02 12:09:05 PST 2009
I blocked off the lower grill for the winter in hopes of warming up the engine quicker. A piece of black foamcore 4x30" behind the grill: I'd rather have it look low key than try to gain any slight aerodynamics by modding in front of the grill. I'm hoping to save a little gas by warming up the engine faster. I take mostly short (10-20mi) trips. Update: I've compared the average of two fillups without the cover to two with the cover and saw an increase of 0.75MPG (27.25 to 28MPG), in spite of a small drop in average ambient temp. All fills were ~1/2 a tank at the same pump with no topping off. All the trips were short, mostly stop and go, 20mi or less, driving the way I normally do, which is pretty gently.
Re: 2007 Toyota Tundra Engine Noise [dt4]
by vc17 on Wed Dec 02 06:49:48 PST 2009
I have a 2009 Tundra 5.7L with 5000 miles on the engine. The truck has been to the dealer 4 times for the engine KNOCKING noise, the noise I have is not piston slap, I've owned 3 GM trucks prior to buying the Tundra and I know what piston slap sound like. My issue is different from the issues most of you are reporting. The engine KNOCKING noise in my engine occurres after warm up and at operating temp, the noise comes and goes and is not constant. At 4800 miles the dealer (at the direction of the factory rep) replaced all the hydraulic lifters in Bank 1, after driving the truck for 20 miles, the KNOCKING noise was still present. I took the truck back to the dealer on 112809, got a call back from my service department, there were 3 factory reps at the dealer with my truck, at the direction of the 3 factory reps, they told the dealer to pull the motor out of the truck and tear the motor apart. The factory reps will return to the dealer on 120409 to look at the torn down motor to see what the problem is. I contacted TMC and filed a case when this issue started a few months ago. I'm not here to bash toyota because I love this truck, but Toyota has the WORST customer service I have ever experienced! To all that have this engine noise, I recommend you stay on Toyota and file a case with TMC and be PERSISTANT.
Re: Heat Wave! [xwesx]

I DO understand ... After a period of time here where we can have temps below zeros and bitter wind-chills, we can get 20's and I find myself going out to get the mail without a coat and thinking how "warm" it feels! (Just not quite this early in the season ....)
