I have had the VW Jetta TDI in the Mohave Desert and on those dirt paths aka roads. It has also been off road in the Monument Valley areas. While I have done it and probably will continue to do it, I would not recommend it as the ground clearance is indeed low. The Jetta is indeed a ROAD car.
Some More Questions K????/

K, {1} ;) now the D4 light tends to blink off and on when I was driving and the speedometer would go nuts spinning all over the place. We noticed that when the cruise control was on, and this happened, it would shut it off right away. What causes this? {2}Another thing, the gauge that tells you when your car is getting hot, a few times it went close to H in the red , than when we gunned the motor, it gradually went down. This happened when we were like in a fast food line or waiting awhile in traffic. Is it the thermostat sticking, cuz as quickly as it went up, it shot right back down!! WIERD!! ;) Owner of a 91 Acura Legend 4DR
Ignition switch? Main Relay? What is it ???????

1991 Acura Legend 4 DR--- How can you tell if it's your ignition switch or your main relay? They have similarities in troubleshooting the problem of why the car won't stay on after you try to start it and it kicks over?
Kia Problems too numerous to mention, Transmission
by roadturtle on Fri Sep 23 17:07:11 PDT 2005
Wow !! Another one. I too live in the high desert. Apple Valley. I have taken my 2005 Kia Sorento to High Desert Kia 12 times for a total of 35 days in the shop so far in only the first four months of ownership. Here is an example of my problems with my Kia Sorento; 1. The passenger air bag stopped working. The sensor in the passenger seat is " Defective". After numerous tries to fix it they sent it in. They replaced the seat sensor. It took 11 days. It now works. 2. The transmission is horrible. They finally admitted Kia Corp will not let them fix it. It shifts in to neutral betweeen shifts, then clunks in to gear snapping your head back. It does this in 1 to 2nd to 3rd to 4th. My trans does not go into 5 th gear. Even at 75 miles an hour. When you stop the transmission clunks. 3 Two clocks installed so far, 4. One new battery, 5. Headliner rattles fixed twice. The dealer went to Toyota to get a part to fix it. 6. Headlights go dim if I run the air conditioner. I must run the air. I live in the Mohave desert. 7. Etc, etc etc. This is just a few of the problems I have had with my 2005 EX 4x4 Sorento. I have hired an attorney. I am pursuing the Calif Lemon Law refund. The service writer at High desert Kia told me there was two of us having the same problems at this dealership. People at the dealership told me to higher an attorney. They were right. What good is a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty if they can't fix their own cars. Let alone you have to take it back every week so they can try it again. Good Luck Kia owners I am buying a Toyota when I get my money back.

mullins87, thanks for the help. I build race engines on gas but never dealt with a diesel before so I'm on uncharted territory. I'll take a look at the links and I agree with you on the pre-turbo pyrometer. What's nice about the new Duramax's is that they come factory with a good trany temp gauge. Dealing with the Hypertech's get me a little nervous so I set it to the lowest setting and I will be towing my 30' race trailer to Texas to give it her first workout!!! On another note, I'm not sure why my email is private but I'll change it!!!
