Unless you wanted to go to Flagstaff where there is snow, you might want some type of AWD.

Road Trip Details by michaell on Tue May 31 09:52:17 PDT 2011

As previously mentioned, my wife and I took a week long vacation that included stops in both Santa Fe, NM and Sedona, AZ. Details and observations below. Weather was great for the whole trip - no rain whatsoever at all. However, both I-25 and I-40 were quite windy, especially on the return trip. 1827 total miles driven, with an average MPG of 22.51 - this was on a 2010 Mazda CX-7 AWD that had 6,000 miles on it when the trip started. Best tank was 25.79 MPG, worst was 19.93 - the EPA estimates for the CX-7 are 17 city, 23 hwy. I use shell V-power 91 octane exclusively ... the most I paid per gallon was $4.099 in both Pecos, NM and Flagstaff, AZ. The lowest price per gallon was in Pueblo, CO at $3.889. I spent a total of $315 on gas, which was just $15 over my pre-trip estimate. I am amazed by the quality of the roads I traveled on - particularly I-40 in NM and AZ, given the amount of truck traffic there is. Boneheaded move of the trip was by a pickup truck with Wyoming plates on I-40 eastbound in NM. He changed lanes and cut off a NM State Trooper, who promptly pulled him over. Surprisingly, I only saw one true speed trap - in northern NM on I-25, where 3 state troopers had congregated. Fortunately, I was heading the other direction. Spent most of the trip driving 4-5 over the limit - so 79 or 80 on most of the interstates.

Re: How many years until another bailout is needed? [lemko] by berri on Sat Jul 02 17:39:35 PDT 2011

I think any one who grew up in the 50's or 60's should visit at least part of Route 66. I driven on some different sections. My favorite is in Arizona. They have preserved an original portion from just west of Flagstaff (Williams I think) to Kingman. You can continue on to Oatman from there. Oatman gets all of the publicity, but I think that the section I discussed is more what a typical drive on it would have been like for Midwesterner or Easterner driving in the Southwest back then. There is a place off of it called Grand Canyon Caverns that is actually a neat little tour of a cave area. We had a Buick rental car. I think you have to drive it with some American iron. Either a Corvette, or a Detroit boat (including station wagons). The Buick rental worked and I know lemko and Uplander would approve! I returned to Flagstaff on I-40 and the drives really are different. Someday I think I'd like to drive the loneliest highway Rt 50 through Nevada and Utah...and don't forget the rock 'n roll oldies CD's.

Re: 2011 Ford F150 Eco Boost [cat125] by bubbabud on Sat Jul 02 06:58:20 PDT 2011

Torque is the amount twist at agiven RPM. the more torque and higher RPM equel more horsepower. the Ecoboost deveopes its max torque at lowerRPM hence it can do more work at alower engine speed. Ideal for trucks. I took delivery of my Ecoboost F150sc on 05/30 2011 and have only put 1600 miles on it but it is averageing 21.3MPG On a trip to Flagstaff AZ. elev. 7000 ft.Inoticed NO drop in power The torque is comparable to my first dodge diesel. Now if it will just stay together this truck will be awsom.

Here in Flag the prices are $3.59 -$3.69 for regular just off the I40...in town a ways you can drop down to $3.39; however, I'm seeing that creep to $4 happening daily....and a client of mine who owns a gas/mini mart thinks $5 is not too far off
