Does performance count as entertainment? Good point!!!

Since everyone loves the E46, how are they as a used buy? Could I expect a similar experience? They seem more complicated. Electrics good? Assuming good presentation, how many miles would cause you pass? And last, how reliable is the steptronic tranny? The E46 gets pretty good marks for reliability; the newer the better. A PPI by someone that KNOWS BMWs is essential. A full service history is nice to have as well. The 2003-2005 ZHP is the best variant out there; it's the closest thing to an E46 M3 you can get: Later ZHP cars are available with a slushbox. Heresy! ;)
Re: 2002 530i 59,000 $12,900 - Good Deal? [hip_hip_hooray]

Anything I should know about this year/model, seems like a solid year? The 1997-2003(E39) 5ers are just brilliant sport sedans. The inline sixes are very reliable and trouble free. Water pumps tend to go south in the 60K-100K mileage window, and I'd R&R the radiator and t-stat at 100k just to be on the safe side. Heck, I'd buy an E39 530i if I could find one with a stick(though I'll probably end up putting my financial well being in mortal peril by purchasing an E39 M5 :P ). If the car checks out, have the ATF and final drive oil changed immediately. I doubt an extended warranty is worth the money. At worst you'll be looking at replacing some suspension parts, accessory belts/pullies, and maybe a couple of power window regulators prior to 130K.
Re: 530i (2004) driveshaft [Mr_Shiftright]

I wonder what a "cracked" driveshaft is then? Sounds very unusual. My wife's CPO 1997 528i had a low speed rumble/vibration that was independent of engine speed and wheels/tires fitted. My dealer has a first class service department and they diagnosed a bent driveshaft. It was replaced under the CPO warranty, no questions asked. I still wonder how one could tweak a driveshaft without hitting/running over something. FYI, BMW continues to use two-piece driveshafts fitted with 1-2 guibos and a center bearing, as you can see on this F01 parts diagram.

This little exercise made me appreciate how difficult a business this must be. Buying a car, that you have some idea about, but who knows why it is really in the auction? What if the engine or transmission are gone? Seems pretty risky. Just for fun I made a nationwide search on Auto Trader for: 1. MY 2000 manual transmission sedans 2. With under 100K miles 3. Asking prices over $14,000 There were 57 total. Four were Audis and the rest were BMW 5ers- and all but four were M5s. I guess it's hard to put an accurate number on such a rare bird..

I do not think the dealer will send it to auction as it is a special car and as the old phrase goes, there is an a** for every seat. Well, I hope that's not the case; this dealer does seem to get rid of anything that hangs around too long. I know I shouldn't ask this, but how much is the Defender? ;)
