Ah, the Cuyahoga River. Yeah, was just finishing high school around that time (the '69 fire, not the '52 one). Lot of milestones over the years - TMI, the Exxon Valdez, Bhopal, the last free flowing stretch of the Little TN river.... A lot has changed. But a lot hasn't. You probably haven't heard squat about this one, that's been going on since mid-August and just got worse: Australia oil well catches fire (BBC) "Engineers have been struggling for more than 10 weeks to stop the leak which is spewing out natural gas and oil at an estimated 400 barrels a day." The spill is up to 9.7 million gallons now (the Exxon Valdez dumped about 10.8 million gallons).

oh, speaking of CR-V's, remember that "double gasket" issue with the oil filter that could make them spray oil and catch on fire? I dunno how widespread that was, but I personally saw two of them. One was on the median of the DC Beltway and I forget where the other one was. Neither was totally engulfed though, but just burning around the front. I never understood how that could happen...until one day I changed the oil on my Intrepid and it happened. I had taken the old filter off, and didn't realize that the gasket had come loose, and was still stuck to the engine. Put the new filter on, and something didn't seem quite right as I tightened it. That should have been my signal to double-check, but I let it go. Started the car up, and it didn't sound quite right. There were, for lack of a better word, vulgar squirting and squealing sounds coming from under the hood, like what you'd hear in a dirty cartoon (not that I know of such things. :P ) Well, I had changed the oil in my grandmother's driveway, and drove the car down to the end of it, got out, and saw a big oil puddle spreading underneath. Got the car off the driveway, saw where it was coming from, and when I took the filter back off, that's when I noticed there were now two gaskets! And sure enough the old filter had no gasket on it. Good thing I stopped the car, too, because it ended up squirting out about 3 quarts in 100 feet! I swear, in 20 years of changing oil, I'd never seen something like that happen! Oh, and to add insult to injury, even though I cleaned up that oil streak the best I could, it still left a mark. And around that timeframe, Bing.com (used to be local.live.com) updated their aerial photographs of the neighborhood, and that streak in my grandmother's driveway showed up in all it Valdez-like splendor.

If every state sets up regulations like CA we will not have any resources to use. Your article is basically a political ad. So where are the real statistics. Just being number one in those categories does not take into consideration how much they produce of a given product that has hazardous emissions associated with that production. Just as we know there is no such thing as a ZEV anywhere on earth. Even a bicycle has some pollution involved in the making and emitted by the rider. It would be helpful to know which states were number 2...3 etc. And what they produce to reach those levels. There is no way this planet will be as clean as some folks think it should be. It would be nice to hit a happy medium some where between a deserted island in the Pacific and Chernobyl. The more polluting production that we send to China (CFL Bulbs) the less control we have over emissions. It is hard to mine coal without digging a hole. Congress is directly responsible for the Exxon Valdez, yet they got off scott free. They changed the rules on double hulled tankers to satisfy those giving them money. The Coast guard dropped the ball as well as the crew. Only Exxon was required to pay the cleanup bill.

No foreign car company blunder has cost any American any tax payer money. Toyota got a bunch of tax credits and incentives to build a factory in Tupelo. Who knows when (or if) they'll actually start car production there. VW may turn out the same way over in Chattanooga. I suspect some of the other foreign companies shuttered plants due to sales projections blunders over the years (Isuzu maybe?). Xrunner2, any of that stuff is going to take time. If the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge was opened to drilling tomorrow, I've heard it'd still take a decade or longer for the oil to reach Valdez.

Looking at the photo of that dash, I really don't see a good place to stick a cupholder at all. I'm thinking gimbal hanging from the headliner :-) Seriously, get one of those Wizard things from Wal-Mart that clip into the door between the door panel and the glass. That way you'll just burn your lap if you spill your Starbucks.

Drainholes in electronic boxes? Just take a look at the housing of the computer you're using right now. It has vent holes all over and it's filled to the brim with electronics! :) Drainholes are another matter entirely but underwater cameras are sealed pretty well. ;) tidester, host SUVs and Smart Shopper
