That law is alive and well in Alaska, though rarely enforced (as we discuss with LLC...). Given the large percentage of out-of-state drivers on the major highways, I think it would be better-heeded if the law was regularly posted. I have only ever seen it posted on the Seward highway, where turnouts are now readily available and traffic flow is heavy. I am not certain, but I think the Seward Highway is one of the most deadly in America, so every bit of courtesy a driver can muster on that road really does go a long way toward both reducing congestion and making it a safer road for all.

I had a couple of boating friends who lived up Bear Valley, but didn't get up there in the winter. But I went to a party in Rainbow in the dead of winter in '80/81, fresh from Mississippi, and my Bug was the only rig that made it to house. Everyone else had to park along the way and walk. Some parked on the Seward Highway and walked up a mile.

I knew literally dozens of people who got weatherized. The friend in Seward is just now doing it because he just bought a house there. Then there all the energy star appliance ratings so you can decide whether to buy a power pig frig or not. Of course, DOE now thinks it's a national security agency.

I had a lot of house weatherization stuff done when I lived in Alaska. Over 15 years in the same house, my gas and electric bill went down. My bud up in Seward is getting an energy audit next month. So DOE saved me some bucks. Actually with the credit I got up there with my furnace upgrade rebate, and the tax credit I got a couple of years ago with my more efficient water heater, I've saved thousands, thanks to those "bureaucrats."

Alaska Unleaded Average Regular Mid Premium Diesel Current Avg. $3.941 An old friend of mine drove down to Seward Alaska last Wednesday and RUG there was $4.08. Seward is a couple of hours south of Anchorage and is very road accessible. And it's ~66 miles from a Tesoro refinery that makes gasoline. I hear the Anchorage TV station is testing one of the new HHO (ho ho ho?) gizmos so I've been watching for that report. That may be a scam rumor too though - someone just asked about a Palm Beach TV station getting fantastic results with their residual gas in the cylinder device in a news truck over in Edmunds Answers.

That's the image I remember most, for the Volvo 544 nestled amongst those big Chevies. Seems a lot of oddball European cars made it to Alaska back then. I once saw in an old video of the disaster, in one of the flooded towns (Seward?) a lowline fintail driving through the rubble. There weren't many of those anywhere. Cars in disasters...I could get going on this... Here's the above shot from another angle: And this tsunami damage shot is a winner. Looks like an Isetta 600 (!) on a 62 Ford. Crazy
