. North Pole Ice Set To Melt By Summer 2020 Bad News for the coming Ice Age Scientists at the University of Cambridge say it is "invaluable evidence". Professor Peter Wadhams, head of the Polar Physics Group said: "Up until now we've always thought of the Arctic Ocean as a white lid on top of the planet. "But now that lid is being lifted and replaced with an open ocean which changes everything. It really is bad news." As the ice disappears so too does its wildlife, from polar bears to walrus and seals. Moreover, the Arctic sea ice has been described as earth's refrigerator, and as it melts, it is expected to have a major impact on the world climate. Campaigners are taking this latest research to the Copenhagen climate conference in December in the hope that the evidence will convince world leaders to take action in cutting carbon emissions.

It's amazing that we both view and study the Alaskan webcams. I quite frequently take a peek at Barrow at different times of the year. Pretty soon, the open sea will be iced over and temperatures will be dropping to generally 15 to 35 below from about mid November to the end of March. There is still a little daylight left around mid day, but in a few more weeks, Barrow will be in total darkness as it is located well north of the Arctic Circle. The Arctic Circle is at 66.5 degrees Latitude. On December 21, the sun will be just below the horizon at local Noon at the Arctic Circle and thus you basically have 24 hours of darkness. On June 21 (summer solstice), the sun is located just above the horizon at local Midnight. In other words, there are 24 hours of daylight. At the Pole itself, the sun rises on March 21 and sets on September 21.

"...Our air conditioner DID just need a charge!..." Mine too, really, that's all it needed. Cold as the north pole now. Guess mine was the only one. :)
Craigslist 1983, DC area...

Of course, since I busted on them in my last post, now I find a Continental I actually kinda like...mainly for that dark emerald green color. Dunno much about Porsches, but this 944 doesn't look bad. Paint job's kinda silly, but otherwise this 5-series don't look too bad. Decently preserved Crown Vic in period earth-tones. I was starting to be impressed when I saw they spelled "Alfa" and "Romeo" correctly, but they lost me at "convertable" Nice pic of the asphalt in this Mark VI ad. Cheap hauler...I imagine the engine should last forever. Oh, the humanity. This '83 Silverado doesn't seem bad for the price. Although I don't care for that "designer" interior, and I wonder how much the lowering hurt the utility. And I'm learning to be leery of vehicles that have had potentially half-assed engine swaps or "upgrades". I guess Diesel-mania hasn't hit the DC area yet judging from the price, but from the sounds of it, this one might need some work. If it's just a 380, is this one just a poseur-mobile? Not bad looking, but then everything looks better wet. Rare because it's a truly special, prestigious breed, or rare because nobody wanted it new? Another Diesel Benz...miled up, but might still have some life left in her. Isn't the North Carolina State Tree one of these wrapped around a telephone pole? Still, might not be bad if it all checks out. Another Benz Diesel...this one looks kinda nice. Shortbed GMC Sierra that looks nice in spite of its miles. Wish he'd mention which engine it has.

You probably can't turn it off, but you should be able to re-calibrate it, if it is not reading properly. On those (not Mercedes) that I've had, you had to press a button, then drive in a circle (find an empty parking lot, without a bunch of cars or other ferrous metals). Not that if you live very far north of the equator, depending on your relationship to the magnetic pole, or if you have some significant magnetic anomalies, it may never read right. The fuse probably controls the self-dimming as well, so that isn't a solution.

FOR THOSE WHO JUST FOUND OUT THEIR TRACTION BAR RUSTED OFF AND THEIR AXIOM/RODEO IS NOT DRIVEABLE. This is how I was able to have my insurance company "total" my wife's Isuzu Axiom. I got $7500 for the car, and was expecting $0. 1. Call your insurance company and tell them you hit a really bad pothole. Make sure there are potholes or construction near or where you were driving. Or tell them you were driving in a place where you know there is road construction (pretty much most state highways these days). Tell them you almost had an accident and it helps if you had small children or senior citizens with you (empathy play). Both were the case with my wife. You can also visit your local state highway comission and view all the ongoing road construction projects and refer to them by project # (I'll get to this later). Example is like the Mass one: http://www.mhd.state.ma.us/default.asp?pgid=dist/distRoot&sid=wrapper&iid=dist/d- ist.asp Print out a copy of the state highway project report and location and make sure you give it to the adjuster to show him/her that you didn't do this on your own. If you can convince them that road construction by the state caused the unusual damage, then they would not have a chance in hell suing the state for the claim you want them to pay you. 2. DO NOT tell the insurance adjuster about the NHTSA Report # PE09030 opened on June 16th 2009. http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ Telling the insurance adjuster about this pending case will only allow them to assume it's a defect in the car mfg and let you deal with the problem once the government sues Isuzu.....10 years from now. Do not mention this to the adjuster. (The Isuzu Rodeo uses the exact same frame as the Aixom). DO submit your own claim on this site. 3. DO Call Isuzu and file a formal complaint. They will do nothing and will tell you that they are prepared to do nonthing since they don't want your business any more. Record the Case #. 4. DO take pictures of potholes that you say are the some of the ones that you hit. Make sure the hole is on the correct side of the road and match the axel side that is rusted off. Otherwise it will look like you were driving on the wrong side of the road. 5. DO look into the Cash for Clunkers program if it's still in effect by the time you read this posting. I was ready to drive an 8 inch bolt between the frame and the rear trailing arm just good enough for me to drive the car 3 miles to my new car dealer to get $3500. I would have towed it to the parking lot next store to the dealership for $50 and hobble it across the parking lot to get my free money. I had the towing company bring her Axiom to the Isuzu service dealer and they told me the only repair was a new frame for about $6000. Then I had the car brought back to my house and left it there until the adjuster came and eventually towed away. 6. DO expect a letter from your insurance company after they pay the claim (at least in MA) that in such a situation where there is no other driver in an accident, they are allowed by MA law to assume that you are more than 50% at fault and as a result they are eliminating your safe driver credit! Is that a kicker or what! It's not like she hit a pole or tree or other parked car. It was a pot hole left in the road by the state! You are entitled to dispute the judgement and have your day in traffic/insurance court. So.....remember that list of road projects that you pulled down where you ran over the "pot" hole, and remember those compelling pot hole photos you took where you destroyed the car? Well make copies of those and include all of them in your letter stating that the state is at fault in that they did not adequately prepare the road surface for safe driving (unless it says drive at your own risk on signs). Use those photos of the road and surrounding area with constructions ignes, barrels, potholes with objects (like your leg) that show how deep they are. Have these ready for the insurance adjuster in case you feel he's going to find in "favor" of the insurance company. 7. DO ask for another insurance adjuster if the first one doesn't see the damge your way. You probably have been a paying customer for many years now and that is the least they could do. If the car is at a repair facility, state they must have looked at the wrong car or confused your car. If it's at your home (like mine was) be friendly and cordial to the adjuster. Ask if they've ever seen potholes cause this type of damage? Ask if the insurance company would go after the state after paying out your claim (a bit presumptuous). 8. DO file a complaint with the state Insurance Comissioner if you are denied. Call your local consumer advocate. In Boston, we have Hank Phillipie Ryan, Help me Hank, and others on the local network affiliates. A phone call could be worth $7K or more. 9. DO NOT buy another Isuzu.....Just had to throw this one in (since they don't sell passenger cards in North America). Just thought I would pass on my advice to success.
