They have been blocked by bad storms this fall. I wonder why Nome is buying fuel from Russia? They will be paying $10 a gallon for fuel oil if it has to be flown in. Better button up the place and head to AZ for the Winter.

Oh yeah, saw a similar story about that too - the ice is freezing faster than the tanker can get through since the icebreaker is moving faster. Still can't believe the idiots waited so long to try to get the first barge in - Nome ordered the fuel last May. Best GW headline in a while: Is Global Warming A Bipolar Disorder? (Forbes)

Tanker carrying supplies for stranded Alaskan village gets stuck in thick ice flows as it crosses the frigid Bering Sea A Russian tanker carrying desperately-needed fuel supplies for the far northern Alaskan city of Nome keeps getting stuck in thick ice flows as it crosses the frigid Bering Sea in the dead of winter. Fortunately, the 370-foot tanker Renda is escorted by a specially-designed Coast Guard ice breaker, the USCGC Healy, whose extra-thick hull is capable of crashing through ice several feet thick. But that means going is slow. The two ships are covering just five to six nautical miles a day, even though they still have more 300 miles of sea ice to burst through before they can reach Nome. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2083542/Tanker-carrying-supplies-strande- d-Alaskan-village-gets-stuck-ice-flows-crosses-frigid-Bering-Sea.html?ito=feeds-- newsxml

Still plenty of Arctic Ice for anyone that wants it. I would love to see the Arctic as it was when Palm trees swayed in the breezes. And woolie mammoths & saber toothed tigers roamed the vast tundra. Long before man spewed any CO2. Tanker carrying fuel arrives at iced-in Nome, Alaska The especially harsh winter has left snow piled up 10 feet or higher against the wood-sided buildings in Nome, a former gold rush town that is the final stop on the Iditarod dog sled race. On Sunday, everything was covered in a layer of wind-blown snow and vehicles looked frozen in place, as though they haven't been moved in weeks. All time records for cold and snow broken this winter in Alaska. CC yes MMGW NO. http://www.usatoday.com/weather/news/story/2012-01-16/nome-alaska-tanker-arrives- -iced-in/52593438/1

Nothing has really changed. The engine and transmission are still the same. It is just a different way of calculating MPG by the EPA.
