The 2013 Ram 1500 rides much smoother than the competition yet can still shoulder a load. Its interior is functional and attractive even at the volume SLT level. A new 305-hp V6 and 8-speed transmission combination is smooth, powerful and economical. Anyone who'll tow more than 5,000 pounds or so can always opt for the HEMI V8.
PerformanceUnless you really will tow more than 5,000 pounds or so, there isn't much this 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 and 8-speed transmission can't tackle. Take the solid performance, lower price and above-average truck fuel economy and call it a day.
More than adequate when empty, and boy is it smooth along the way. Gets to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds when pressed. Doesn't embarrass itself when towing a moderate load, either.
Stops in 128 feet from 60 mph, which is in line with most cars with similar all-season tires. Pedal feels reassuring, but isn't overly aprupt, a good trait when towing or hauling.
Nice direct feel and linearity. Reassuring response and feedback, even with a heavy load. Goes straight down the road, too. Would be nice if cornering effort built up a tad more.
Body roll and stability are reined in nicely. Good cornering stability, even when the trailer is wagging in the wind. Credit the coil rear suspension's lateral link for that.
We thought an 8-speed might shift too often and annoy. Not so. Shifting is nearly imperceptable because the rpm jumps are small and the engine is never far from its rpm sweet spot.
Sure, a V6 engine is not as strong as the HEMI V8 and won't tow as much. But this V6 handled 5,700 pounds up a steep grade with ease. 8-speed tranny gets another thumbs-up here.
ComfortSure, it feels a tad firm as any empty truck must, but the coil spring rear suspension deals with bumps and impacts in a refined manner. And the cabin is admirably quiet compared to other pickups.
Supportive and well-shaped, the cloth seats in our SLT model remained comfortable after long hours in the saddle. Higher trim levels add lumbar and more adjustability.
The Ram 1500 is a unique pickup because it rides on coil spring rear suspension, which more effectively absrorbs small and large impacts alike with less aftershake.
Our 4x2 generates little tire noise, and the engine note is restrained. It's not overly loud when accelerating up a grade with a trailer, either. Slight wind rush around the mirrors.
InteriorExcellent ergonomics and front cabin airiness. Our test truck was a Quad Cab, which doomed it to mediocre short-trip rear seating. Step up to the Crew Cab and this truck is an easy A. Backup cameras should be standard on pickups, though.
The AC switchgear and touchscreen radio controls are as good as anything, and the driving position is comfy. Steering wheel buttons are small, but they conjure up an amazing array of data.
Front seat access is good and there are A-pillar grab handles. Rear doors have normal hinges and their own grab handles. Rear foot space is a bit tight, but it's a Quad Cab.
Front cabin is open and the styling makes the dash feel airy, not monolithic. Rear seats are tight, but not unexpected for a Quad Cab. Get the Crew Cab for full-size rear seat accomodations.
Quite good to the sides and front, and the mirrors are large. But the rear headrests are big and don't flop down. And our volume-grade SLT lacked a much-needed back-up camera.
Good mirror pockets and fold-down center console space despite 3-across front seating. Rear seat bottoms fold up to reveal deployable tables that creat a flat surface. Neat. Bed is 6'4".
ValueThe Ram 1500 comes across as well-built and advanced even at the SLT level. Ram engineers are clearly not afraid to move the needle with new thinking, and it's paying off. There's a lot to like here.
Build Quality (vs. $)
Exterior gaps and paint quailty are good. Inside, solid material and design choices give off a premium vibe. Quiteness suggests there's no scrimping in unseen places.
At this price we got features the others don't have: 8-speed trans, coil suspension, locking tailgate via remote, sliding rear window, rear seat cargo platform, 115V outlet, etc. No rear camera is baffling.
Our Ram 1500 SLT carried a very reasonable price that matches up well with the competition. It looks and feels more expensive, though.
A strong point. Best in class. The V6 and 8-speed combination really pays off with 17 mpg city, 25 mpg highway and 20 mpg combined. And our observed numbers were strong, too.
Worried about the new 8-speed? No need. The powertrain carries a 5 yr/100,000 mile warranty. The rest of the truck is covered by an unexciting 3 yr/36,000 mile warranty, though.
Roadside assistance is provided through the powertrain warranty and you'll certainly buy less fuel than you would driving a competitor's truck.
Fun To DriveFun might not be the right word, but it's certainly no chore. Pleasant and satisfying describes it well.
It's smooth, composed and comfortable. The suspension, 8-speed and muted engine note makes a real difference. We could spend all day in the saddle if we had to.
