Test Driver Ratings & Comments
Acceleration commentsWilling V6, happy to rev to redline. Very smooth, reasonably quick upshifts. Strong power right off the line. Power braking to 2,000 rpm was good for a tenth or so, and got just a bit of rear wheelspin. Manual shifting is via possibly the silliest system ever -- two tiny little buttons near the cruise control buttons. Does not hold gears to rev limiter. Does not blip throttle on downshifts.
Braking commentsDecently firm pedal, fairly long travel. Definite nosedive, as expected of a pretty plush truck. Minimal brake odor, even by the fifth (and final) stop. First stop was shortest at 133 feet. Fifth stop was longest at 139 feet.
Handling commentsSlalom: With only Trac-off possible, the Ram is ultimately reined in electronically, but I doubt it would go any quicker, really. The tires sounded tortured and the overall reluctance of the truck to transition just led to understeering past the next cone which awakens the ESC. Steering feels properly weighted, but what's with the Chiclet-sized buttons on the wheel? Too similar in size and shape to all the others. Skid pad: Steering heft is minimal here, and now the tires are screaming for mercy. It pains me to skid pad trucks like this, but somebody's gotta do it. Stubborn understeer and latent ESC (closing throttle rather than brake-checks) limit the Ram here as well.
