| Test Driver Ratings & Comments |
| Acceleration comments | Not exactly slow with PSM/ESC on. But things get hopping once PSM is off and Sport Plus mode is on. Then if you quickly stab the throttle, with your left foot on the brake, it goes into a 6,800-rpm Launch Control mode. This gives a perfect amount of wheelspin. PDK upshifts super quick in Sport Plus mode. Always upshifts for itself at redline, even in manual mode, under full throttle. Will hold gears in Manual mode when not at full throttle. Manual shifting via steering wheel paddles or console lever (pull lever back for downshifts -- wrong, Porsche!). Blips throttle on downshifts. |
| Braking comments | Downright awesome braking abilities. Pedal is firm, pedal stroke short. Hardly any nosedive. Little ABS commotion, but the Cayman R would wiggle just slightly to the left on most stops. Fifth out of six stops was the shortest. No fade. |
| Handling comments | Skid pad: Front end feels very light around the skid pad. Midengine layout gives driver a great view of the front of the car to help keep the Cayman right on the arc. Chassis is responsive to drop throttle in order to squelch understeer. PSM/ESC is hardly intrusive at all, only cutting throttle slightly when switched on. Slalom: Incredibly direct steering with near-perfect quickness. Very composed, terrific suspension tuning. Power-on oversteer at last cone is easy to control. Slight understeer throughout slalom, part of what makes the Cayman so predictable. Time was 1 mph slower than the Boxster Spyder, probably due to that car's 140-pound weight advantage. Cayman R could use better tires, such as the Michelin Pilot Sports as on previous Caymans we've tested. Well-calibrated ESC system. |
