This diesel Cayenne returns 30 mpg and over 550 miles per tank. And it does so without compromising the athleticism we expect from Porsche. Comfort is not the Cayenne's high-point. But if you can forgive that in the name of sport, you'll be very pleased.

Performance In this segment it's hard to find an SUV that competes on the same performance level as the Cayenne. It exhibits a character that's uniquely diesel, but without compromising the expected Porsche handling and drivability.
Acceleration
A
With 406 pound-feet of torque on tap, it's hard to believe the power delivery can be so smooth and linear. But it is. We sometimes found it difficult to maintain a steady speed.
Braking
A
These brakes instill confidence. The Cayenne stopped from 60 mph in just 109 feet, which earned it our top rating.
Steering
A
Steering is precise and responsive. Its accuracy makes this SUV a pleasure to drive on straight and curved roadways alike.
Handling
A
The stability control system is extremely lenient. The Cayenne offers three suspension settings (Sport, Normal, Comfort), each with its own personality.
Driveability
A
The Cayenne is smaller than a lot of SUVs on the road, making it easier to drive. Torquey engine and good visibility make it user-friendly.

Comfort Ride quality resides on the firm end of the spectrum. This works nicely with its athletic demeanor but takes away from the overall comfort rating. Stiff side bolsters are great for cornering, but not needed most of the time.
Seating Comfort

The seats are nice, front and rear. No sign of numb butt, even after an extended journey. Although they fit us well, we can see how some would find the heavy bolstering intrusive.
Ride Comfort

The Cayenne's ride is stiff in most situations. Adjusting the suspension has little effect until it's dialed all the way down to "Comfort."
Quietness

An abundance of road and tire noise find their way into the cabin via a near-constant drone. On rough surfaces it gets overly noisy.

Interior The Cayenne gets high marks here. All controls are within reach of the driver. Visibility is great, enhanced by a back-up camera. Cargo storage with all seats in use is about average for the class. Seat bolsters are overly stiff.
Ergonomics

Media interface controls are centrally located on the massive center stack, which spills down into the center console. Anything the driver might need is within easy reach.
Ingress/Egress

Most will find the Cayenne is agreeable height for smooth entry and exit. Stiff side-bolsters on the front seat cushions make entry/exit more difficult.

Front and rear seats have enough space to keep occupants from feeling claustrophobic, unlike some midsize SUVs.

Sight lines are excellent. The assistance of a rearview camera makes parking lot maneuvers easier.
