I'm looking at 2004-2006 Porsche 911 Cabs and my mechanic warned me that there have been several issues with the water cooled engines in the 996s (1999-2003). First, you should be aware that 2004 was the last year of the 996 design, not 2003. With all due respect to fedlawman, I think he is being excessively harsh on the 996. While it is true that many long time "enthusiasts" prefer the 993 to the 996, a big part of the resale value equation is supply and demand. The big difference between SMG's and DSG's from "semi"-automatics like the Tiptronic, BMW's Steptronic and Mercedes Manu-matics is that the SMG's/DSG's are a hybrid manual transmission with an electonically operated clutch and shifter.
