I think a Porsche 993 (last of the air-cooled cars) from 1993 to 1997 (or early 1998), non-turbo, no AWD, no tiptronic, would be ideal. These are rugged dependable cars. Stay away from 90-92 C2s. 964 - did they ever get it right?
I've heard that the '964' edition of the 911 is undesirable compared to the '993'. Market pricing seems to bear that out, because low mileage 993's seem to be in the mid-$40Ks and up. I always liked Porsches and have had great respect for the marque since I was a little kid.
