I have a 2000 pontiac sunfire and it's obviously giving me problems. first and most threatening is the fact that it stopped shifting. Around 20 mph it revs at around 1800 rpm and 30 at 2500 rpm. it started after hitting a pot hole in my works parking lot. i took it to a shop and they replaced a fuse and it was good again. hit another pot hole going down ... What you're hoping for just is not possible in the real world. Every change you make to the motor has a downside in another area. The real power increases are made by pushing more fuel/air mixture into and pulling more burned gases out of the motor. Now I think you are smart enough to be able to understand that pushing more fuel into and pulling more gases out of a motor ... Read More

    Written by: mi325i on Aug 3, 2009 7:12:34 PM

Just did a head gasket, waterpump, plugs and wires. I flushed the cooling system which took quite a bit of time(45 min.). The vehicle was running the entire time and seemed normal. The next day I started it up and it ran fine until it reached normal opperating temp, then stalled out and would refire. After several hours I rechecked and it started fine, and again stalled when it got warm. ... Read More

Just had the same headlight problem on a 2000 sunfire. There is a common ground underneath the battery, bolted to the chassis. That particular ground is for all of the lights in the front of the vehicle and the washer pump. The car I was working on had a lot of corrosion on the connections. I cleaned it up and the problem was solved.

When you had the spark plugs replaced, did you do them yourself? If you replaced them yourself, did you gap them? These cars use platinum spark plugs , which are usually about $6.25 each. They are supposed to be gapped already but don't rely on that. I bought a set that wasn't gapped. Get a gapper, usually about $1.00. take each spark plug out one at a time and REMOVE ONLY ... This may be a solution. I have a 1996 Sunfire, 2.4L, manual transmission. Although it never stalled it would buck and hesitate when trying to accelerate. Turns out the ignition coil went bad. The spark plug could be seen arcing with the cover off. The brand new replacement was bad, as was the brand new replacement after that.
