Grand Prix A.K.A Tranny Problems
Vehicle
1999 Pontiac Grand Prix 4 Dr GTP Sprchgd Sedan
Review
I love this car but hate it at the same time. The car really is a eye catcher. This is my 2nd prix first one (96)tranny went out at 110k, my current one went out 111k and then went a 2nd time at 135k. I almost forgot I was told the 99 Prixs only fit 99 trannys. Fun fun. The frames on them are crap so if you wanna add more horsepower good luck on not cracking the frame. Headlights fog up with dirt. Good luck getting up any hills in the snow without all 4 studded tires.
Favorite Features
It's a really nice looking car. Doesn't take a lot to make it look hotter. Quick perfomance and handling. Can keep up with a lot of cars.
Suggested Improvements
Transmission. The weird noises from the engine. Bring back to low gear start like in the 96. Stronger frame.

My parents are the original owners since new! I drive the Grand Prix whenever I come home because I love it, nice break from my Suburban! The Grand Prix has 114,000 miles on it and still resembles a newer car. The 3.8L engine is undestructable and has never failed us! Just usual oil changes, and minimal problems. My dad will run this car until it can go no longer, which should not be anytime soon.
Favorite Features
3.8L V6, Ice A/C (5 vents), Bose sound, steering wheel controls, huge backseat, pass through trunk, Pontiac reliability, fire engine red, spoiler!
Suggested Improvements
Everyone has complained of the window motors which we have experienced too, but i say its better than mechanical problems.. none of those!
Nice but has its flaws

Overall decent buy. I bought the car wit about 153,000 miles mostly highway miles. I now hav 160 and so far had a dirty EGR valve, bad O2 sensor, and a faulty crank shaft position sensor. The position sensor cost $160 to fix. The O2 sensor was a great opportunity to upgrade to a performance sensor $80. The car attaches itself to you. Great looking, and great open throttle sound bouth inside and out. Keeps up with many newer tuner cars!
Favorite Features
Engine sound, especially after a cold air intake ($280). Acceleration. Styling, and all right stock system.
Suggested Improvements
Too much work just to change spark plugs. Seriously! It seema easy until you try. The plug is stuck unforgivingly to the boot. and the 3 plugs in the back are a pain to get to. When it rains all night, there is water in the car. Headlights are too dim.

This car has been amazing since the date of purchase. Currently at 200,000 Km. I've only owned rear wheel drive vehicles before so going into a front wheel drive was going to require an adjustment but this car feels like it is RWD with power on tap and it never lets me down. Only repair issue was the front end snapped ($2000 repair job from GM) but that's been it for 6 years of ownership. Not like the average GM vehicle, brakes actually last for a long time, no head gasket issues, transmission doesn't kick, interior plastic parts haven't snapped off yet!! Another great thing is the amount of aftermarket parts for this car (projector headlights, body skirts, spoilers...)
Favorite Features
The power baby!! only states 200 hp, I think thats a lie, it feels much more powerful. The body styling (I've done a slight GTO mod, added functional intake hood scoops) The exhaust note is awesome too, I can always tell when another grand prix has passed my home by the sound of the exhaust.
Suggested Improvements
The stereo has to be amplified, its so weak, too bassy and no treble. The instrument cluster is starting to dim to such a point that its hard to see it at night. Keyless entry died very soon into ownership, battery replacement was not the issue, actual sensor inside vehicle has stop working.

Bought vehicle @50k repair trans pressure solenoid @75k change plugs, wires, hoses, battery, tires, front wheel bearings @100k replace water in headlamps @110k change coolant and trans fluid @125k ac leak @145k squirrel cage fan squeal @150k lower intake manifold and valve covers @160k replace front brakes every 25k and rear every 50k change oil every 6k change air filter every 12k car has been maintained pretty well, and has performed acceptable. I have enjoyed the car, but am getting tired of it. The car now has significant squeak and rattle and the exterior is showing signs of rust. I will drive the vehicle until the next transmission failure, which I anticipate at 200k.
Favorite Features
Great leg room for tall drivers. Sporty exterior. Decent performance for natural aspirated V6. Excellent Bose stereo. comfortable seats. Ok fuel economy at 24avg combined at 160K miles. Easy to drive, easy to maintain. popular engine.
Suggested Improvements
Should have fixed the gasket problem when first discovered. Not ten years later. Better cup holders. More robust transmission. Less cheap plastic, interior feels like it was engineered by playskool. Increase speed of power seat.

I have had my Pontiac Grand Prix GT ever since I turned 16, 2 years ago. I have had many problems with it. My windows are broken and they fall down while going down the road. The headlights are so dim that it looks like I am driving down the road using a flashlight. The gauges don't work. My panels came off the inside of the car. After the fuel pump went out I have had NOTHING BUT TROUBLE out of it. I have been stranded on the side of the road at least 6 times within 3-4 months. I have seen that only the GT's are getting the bad reviews, and I know why! My cousin has a GTP and he has no trouble out of his, but my GT sucks. Everything is wrong with this car!

I needed another car, wasn't in a position to buy a new car right, saw this car and liked it right away. I've always liked the Grand Prix, they look so darn good. I've only had mine for a couple of months but so far I have put about 1500 miles on it and have had no problems with it even though it is a 9 year old car. The previous owner took care of it and I love to drive it. It has power when I need it. It is roomy enough for my three children, it feels like a big car on the inside but it is sporty looking on the outside. It burns more gas than my previous car, which is to be expected since my Mazda was a 4 cylinder and this is a V6. I just love this car.
Favorite Features
I like the way the interior is laid out. Everything can be reached very easily while driving. I have a pretty good sound system too.
Suggested Improvements
I have had the same problem with my windows like I've read in other previews so that would need to be improved. Other than that I can think of nothing else.
Not bad

Really good car! Bought at 112000 now has 185000. No problems whatsoever except for an O2 sensor. Still picks up and goes. 3.8l engines are bulletproof in my opinion.

Purchased it with 112K MI. Immediately had to fix the front axel, half a year later fuel pump went out, another half a year later torque converter had to be worked on (1500 price tag), breakes needed work too, then engine on the powerwindow broke. AC had to be fixed. Every time it rains water gets in the trunk and under the drivers sit. Windshield had to be replaced and since it has a display on it it was expensive! Now the torque converter broke again! And its only 143K now! I put in repairs more then I paid for the car! I never abused it, did all the maintenance and will never ever buy it again or recommend to anybody I know.

Fun to drive, display on the windshield, comfortable
