Review

This car has had all sorts of problems from the moment we bought it. If it wasn't leaking oil, it was going through 2 (yes 2) alternators in a little over a year. Plus the stupid check engine light comes on all the time for no apparent reason (except to get us to fork over $80 to get it turned off). Basically it's been a money pit. But hey, it looks nice.

Looks nice. Handles well.

Don't break down as much.

Looks sharp! Handles well in snow. Throw on 4 Blizzak tires and 7 feet of Buffalo snow won't stop you.

I have had nothing but trouble with this car from the moment I have bought including 1 recall for the starter. I have put $4000 worth of work into this car. I have had to replace the brakes about 4 times, replaced the manifold gasket, head gasket, fan belt, tires (twice) roters, strut mound, struts, trasmission line, a/c ...... Please be careful buying this car.

I bought my wife a used '96 Grand Am GT with 42,000 miles. I thought that was low milage considering we bought it in '02. I went ahead and purchased an extended warranty, thank god. After owning the vehicle for one week we had to replace the Window motor driver side, the head gasket, the O2 Sensor, and the Alternator. Granted, we purchased used so I don't know how the vehicle was being maintained by the previous owner. But I've heard similar problems with this model from other owners.

Comfortable to drive, the GT V6 has nice pick-up, when the car isn't in the shop.

Review

I bought this car, a demo, from a dealer with less than 3000 miles on it. This car is on it's THIRD totally new, transmission at 62,000 miles. All of the window motors and door locks, the coil housing unit (twice), the catalytic converter (twice), power steering unit, water pump and both oxygen sensors were replaced within three years. There have been numerous repairs to gauges, fans, and pressure lines. I've had the car towed twice this year because it starts and then chokes off immediately. They can't find the problem. I got a recall notice today from GM stating a "starting" problem that could cause fire. Great!! I wouldn't recommend this car to anyone.

I great when the side view mirror control knob is your biggest complaint Slight turning blindspots need work

This is a really nice car. The design for price is a plus. It's inexpensive and yet doesn't look like a box. With a little four cylinder engine it can really move too.

A decent amount of power for the price and the mileage is fantastic.

Suggested Improvements

The under the hood design stinks. A broken waterpump cost me almost $400 because they had to pull the engine to replace it.

I've put 100,000 miles of hard city driving on this car and haven't had one problem; the most reliable car i.ve ever owned.

Favorite Features

a manual tranny and 150hp on this lite of a car really makes it scoot. very tight turning radius.

Suggested Improvements

eliminate the feature which automaticly turns on the overhead lite when the door is opened.

I loved my car, until the engine blew in it. I found out that this is typical in Pontiac Grand Am's. Too bad I found this out a little to late. GM would not help me replace the motor because (1) I was not the original owner (2) I was over the warranty (BY 400 MILES). If I could do it all over I would NOT buy this car. My experience with GM has been horrible, I have never experienced such rude customer service before. I will never buy another GM and I will try to convince others of the same.

When i first bought this car is was not sure how it would work out but in the end i feel in love with this car. It has been a good sturdy car that has lasted me longer than i expected.

My favorite feature is the room for storage and people.

Making cruise control standard.
