I love it

I love my car - Canadian. I now have 202,000 kms on the original transmission and motor. Sure needs regular maintenance - hard on brakes. But very reliable and well worth it!
Favorite Features
I like the look of the Grand Am. The interior comfort and convenience I like better on this model then the newer models
Suggested Improvements
I like it a lot, but would change the tire wells
Worst Mistake Ever

I bought this car as I was graduating high school, and now I wish I never bought the car. I have had the EGR valve replace, Transmission clamp, fuel injectors, axle, and many other things at an inflated price. It has cost me more to keep it working then I wish I would of ever thaught. I will never buy a GM again.
Favorite Features
I would have to say the best feature is the steering wheel stereo control buttons. I think that is the best thing.
Suggested Improvements
GM should make a car the is reliable, that starts every time, and has low maintance cost.
Fun at a cost.

Nice car to drive. Handles well. Comfortable. Nice features. Good engine and smooth transmission. Lots of untimely repairs. Two major and costly warranty repairs. 3 alternators, 2 window motors, 2 fuel filters, 2 O2 sensors, driver side control arm, fuel pressure regulator, starter motor, and the big bad water pump that costs about $550 to repair. Just hope the thermostat never goes out. Thats in the water pump.

Some pretty poor mechanical planning. Hire some better engineers.
Another Repair

Car purchased new from dealer. Have replaced every power window motor at least once and two, twice, @ 2-400 each. Transmission is loud when shifting. Continued problems with gear shift and not being able to remove the key when vehicle is placed in park. Another $600 repair. Interior doesn't wear well. Air conditioner is unreliable at best. Every dealer gives a different story as to what it would take to repair. UNRELIABLE CAR. NEVER AGAIN

Don't know if the newer model have the same issues? Unreliable product.
5 Speed, 4 Cyl, 4 Dr GT - Water pump!
Vehicle
1996 Pontiac Grand Am 4 Dr GT Sedan
Review
OK, overall I have enjoyed this car which I bought new, but the mechanical reliability is questionable. The worst design flaw is the water pump it is driven from the cam chain and requires a MAJOR stripdown of one side of the engine to replace. For a water pump!!! They cost over $500 to replace and last about 40000 miles - Pontiac this was not a smart idea.
Favorite Features
Road handling and a reasonable 5 speed transmission. The paint has held up well, it's as red now as it was in the showroom - not bad since it has spent it's life in Atlanta GA.
Suggested Improvements
Look to sort out the water pump on the four cylinder engine. Plus the ignition coils overheat and fail sitting on top of the manifold. Also relocate the exhaust tail pipes I know people who have burnt their legs reaching into the trunk (including me).

I've had a very good experience with my Grad Am. Bought it with 30,000 miles on board. Other neg. reviewers must have driven the car too hard. I've enjoyed the Power, the Styling, the Reliability. Only had typical American car problems.(replace d altenator, water pump,)Interior is cheaply made, but, holds up very well to usage.
Favorite Features
Styling.Engine reliability.Gas mileage.
Suggested Improvements
For the purchase price not much more you can add.

I've owned this car now for 7 years and 140,000 miles. The last 2 years it has been driven by my teenage daughter. She shows it no mercy, but it keeps going without problems. Only major repair of note was replacing the water pump at 75,000 miles. (rather expensive repair for a water pump). Car is excellent on the ice and snow. It has never failed to start or died on the road. Very inexpensive, reliable transportation.
Favorite Features
Excellent traction control. Very safe handling vehicle in extreme weather conditions.
Suggested Improvements
$700 repair for a water pump because the timing mechanism must be removed to access the pump. No gold star for the engineering design.

New transmission at 33,000 miles. New head gasket at 50,000 miles and new intake manifold gasket at 65,000 miles, among other less annoying and cheaper failures. Quality lacking in this machine. I won't buy a Pontiac again!

Sporty appearance

Improve your quality Pontiac. Entirely too many major breakdowns.
