    Hey Im having problems with my rpms surging uphill. I bounces about 3-500 rpm difference. My check engine light was on but turned off. I did have it checked when it was on. It came up as o2 sensor 1 on bank 1. It don't sound likely. Can anyone please help???? I recently serviced trans and new intake gasket and all fluids.

    Well not a room to make a profit in a car like that. It can't be worth much more that $2000 if it's decent looking, so you'd have to count on the problem being relatively easy to diagnose and repair.     Thanks for your responses. I usually turn the gas cap till it clicks 3 times. Last time I fueled up was last Wednesday and didn't fill it, just about 3/4 of a tank. The light came back on Tuesday of this week.

    3 clicks is usually good. Did the light come on shortly after re-fuel? New cap aftermarket that may not seal exactly right? Its my understanding that overfilling fuel tank (trying to get to exact dollar amount thing) may damage some evaporative systems. Is there a tether on cap that may be stuck underneath and preventing good seal? Mis-aligned cap? Just some thoughts on possibilities ;)

    Could be a leak somewhere else in the vapor recovery system if your getting the same code. You were putting on the cap tight enough until it clicks a few times, right?

    The Passlock security system on my 2000 Grand Am went out several months ago and I spent about $400 having a locksmith replace the key set (tumblers). It looks like the same system is going out again and I am not looking forward to having this part replaced annually. Has anyone experienced the same problem? I have checked with Pontiac regarding service advisories.

    I always thought the noise was due to the pads being forced all the way to the back stops in the caliper and then forward again the next time you brake moving forward. There has to be some clearance or they would lock up in the caliper.     I've had the same problem with a clicking sound when using the brakes specifically when going in reverse. The Problem is intermittent and doesn't occur all the time. I'm not sure i understand what you refer to as "lubricating under the piston hood". Are you refering to the Piston Housing?

    I had a problem with a clicking sound that accompanied brake pedal movement. Turns out there is a problem with the pistons that can be fixed by lubricating under the piston hoods with brake fluid. It's a little unconventional but it worked. There is a service bulletin that describes this fix.

    I doubt that the adjusters are frozen on a car that new, and since the pedal height is normal I wouldn't pursue that anymore. You can check them two ways: If the drum is off you can simply hold the adjuster lever away from the star wheel and see if the adjuster turns normally, or you can use a screwdriver or brake spoon and do the same thing from the backside ...     Brake pedal height and travel are normal. Not sure if the rear shoes are adjusted properly, I know that they self adjust when the vehicle is in reverse. However, I didn't think it should be "clicking" all the time. What do I need to do to tell if the adjusters are working properly? By the way......Thanks for the reply its greatly appreciated.

    Are the rear brakes adjusted properly? They're self adjusting of course, but if the adjusters are not working they may have extra travel. How's the brake pedal height? Does the pedal travel a long way when you apply the brakes?

    i had the same issue with mine but was a 96 and i added new starter adn other things i think its in the ignition or if you have an alarm remove the alarm and replace the igniton. its what i did and worked fine.

    Then I am just talking about the 04-03s. Has anyone who had these year models of Grandam GTs had any signficant/ constant problems with those grand ams? The reason is, I might buy one, however, I am not a big GM car fan. Seeing how they are put together.

    There's no 05 Grand Am GT, 2004 was the last year for the Grand Am. At just under 20k miles on my 04 GT, my answer is no.

    I had the same problem with my '89 and took it to a couple mechanics...they were stumped. After I sold it the buyers told me it was the exhaust modulator. I'm on my third Grand Am since then and my last!!

    I had a 1989 Grand Am and was tired of dealing with some of the issues..I traded up to a newer model. The problem I had was once the car was running for awhile it would just shut down. After it cooled down it would start just fine until I ran it for awhile. The people I sold it to had the problem fixed for about $200...it was the exhaust modulator. ... Read More

    Something similar happened to my '95 Grand AM right before the head gasket cracked and water got into my oil. Mine wouldn't shut off while I was driving 60-70, but it would once I hit 20 or lower. Wish I knew what to tell you.
