The clutch on my wife's 2008 off-road failed within 36000 miles (probably more like 25,000 miles) but I missed the 36 month deadline. We took the car to the dealer at the suggestion of my normal mechanic because of a leaky pinion seal which they thought should be covered under warranty. After inspecting vehicle the Service Manager said that once the 36 month or 36,000 mile deadline has passed, the Dealer ... Read More
I am now on my 3rd cluth for my nissan off road xterra 2008. The last clutch went out under 4,000 miles. In my 25 years of driving a stick, I have only had one clutch go out on my after 187,000 miles. They are says its wear and tear. We are not recieving any satisfaction and may be forced to sue.
I had my 2008 OffRoad Xterra stock clutch and pressure plate replayed this weekend with a Jim Wolf Tech system. Very nice. I did some measurements. The JWT clutch is 275 mm in diameter with 45 mm (wide) of clutch surface. The clutch material is 0.127" thick. I measured the stock clutch that was removed. Less than 0.020" left of the clutch material. The manual says it should be at least ... Read More
No I don't drag race it. I baby my 2008 4X4 OffRoad Xterra. I am 70 years old and retired (no rush hour traffic). no competition, no sand, mud or snow. I have driven standard transmission vehicles all my life including some very high performance vehicles. Never a clutch problem. My last vehicle was a 2001 Frontier with 100K miles, no problems. I bought the Xterra new in March of 2008. ... Read More
I have a 2008 Nissan xterra X. I purchased it brand new. 3000 miles differential had to be replaced, almost ever since I bought it clutch felt so annoying and weird, it feels worst and worst, told nissan about the problem, always said that they can't see anything wrong. I had standard cars before, prior to this one I had a Honda S2000 (great car btw), never had any problems. It's ... Read More
I just received a safety recall notice for my 2008 Xterra, NOT for their faulty clutch but for a bad fuel tank sender float arm which can cause the fuel gauge to indicate 1/4 of a tank on 06 and 08 Xterras when the tank is actually empty. According to Nissan, "If this were to occur on your vehicle, the vehicle could stall, which could create an unsafe condition which could ... Read More
A post in April suggested trying a Tribco (www.tribco.com) Kevlar composite clutch. I am still amazed that Nissan won't acknowledge this obvious defective design and take ownership for a better design upgrade at their expense. Mine was replaced by a dealer with the weak OEM design. Many who post their failures say their dealer won't replace under warrantee (clutch and brakes are excluded from the warantee), and a typical replacement charge ... Read More
The repair was indeed covered under warranty. I'm surprised yours was not if you are the original owner. The Xterra is supposed to have a 5 year or 60,000 mile warranty on the drive train. There's no way you should burn up a clutch in less than 75K even if can't drive a vehicle with a clutch very well. Like I said, I'd been hearing the noise & felt vibration since ... Read More
Well, I don't have good news. Finally did hear from my regional manager and of course he kept saying it was a wear item and would not be covered under the warranty, etc...even though I told him of all of these postings here and it was not a driver fault situation, but a inadequate clutch. The Nissan dealership told me it would be $800 to just take it apart to look ... Read More
My 2006 Xterra Off Road just received a new clutch, flywheel, and transmission from a local dealer under warranty at 40K miles. . I've had a rattle & vibe since around 15K. Dealer finally heard it after multiple visits, and told me it was the transmission. When I asked "are you sure" they said they were, even though when I would barely tough the clutch pedal the vibe would stop. I ... Read More
I have not seen anything from Nissan (web searches of recalls, service bulletins, etc) indicating they will take any ownership for repair and correction of this defective clutch design. I don't know how to go about reaching someone with responsibility within the Nissan organization. I don't think the dealers have any clout in forcing this to a head; their hands are tied by Nissan warrantee policy. If anyone has an idea ... Read More
I too am having same issue and would like to know if you have received any positive feedback/answers in regards to this problem with the clutch from Nissan. A regional manager is supposed to call me back after he researches with his engineering department before he can answer me if the repair will be covered under Nissan.
Sometimes manufacturers under-design clutches, or they increase the horsepower and try to get away with using the same clutch. Sounds like Nissan may be guilty of this. You may want to look into using a Tribco www.tribco.com clutch, their 100% Kevlar composite clutch discks are available through many clutch rebuilders.
I too just had to have my clutch replaced at 20.5k miles of normal driving (no off road). My wife and I have had only manual transmissions in all our cars for the past 40 years because of their durability vs. automatics. Boy were we burned by this our first Nissan. I am an ex-automotive engineer and currently restore cars, and I can restate the obvious: Nissan clearly put a weak, ... Read More
So, $2,600 CAD bought me a new clutch but not the confidence that I won't need another soon. Again, this vehicle has had an easy life. There are no bulletins out regarding the clutch. I am an ex automotive engineer engineer - something is amiss! There is just too much evidence concerning the 2006 release. I wonder if we will see a spate more with the 2008 when the mileages get ... Here's the deal I just made on a used Xterra S with 19,000 miles. It was a CPO vehicle from a Nissan dealer. The truck is absolutely pristine - looks like it just rolled of the showroom floor. I paid $17,099 out the door (plus sales tax). I paid cash. Our market (Colorado) is flooded with 2008 Xterras from rental car fleets all with about the same mileage, so there's lots ... Read More
I am considering buying 2008 Off-Road Nissan Xterra it has the Technology package and the Tow package. The dealer is asking for $22K +tax+fees. Any ideas if this will be a good deal.
Thank you for your responses ! I live near Nissan Peacock and those two 2009 xterras they have are 2008 models actually ! Not sure about other dealerships (will call them), but Robbins Nissan, another dealer in my area, don't have 2009 xterras either.. weird, when a new model is released dealerships usually have tons of them.. never seen it on the streets as well. If it's been on sale since ... Read More
Hi guys, Can somebody tell me where 2009 XTerra is ? I don't see it at Nissan dealerships here in Houston. Isn't it due ? It was supposed to be released for sale back in October 2008 as far as I know !? Wanted to take a look at the new 2009 model and drive it, but where the hell is it ??? thanks!
Best price I found in NJ on a 2008 Xterra 4x4 S model with floor mats as the only option ($115.00) is $23,400 if I finance it myself. It would be $26,400 if I take the 0.9% financing currently being offered by Nissan instead of the $3,000 cash-back. Sticker price is $27,505. Has anyone realistically done better than this? Please include details in reply. (Obviously this price is before TTL.)

The government MPG says 16 City and 20 on the highway. I was told by the dealer to expect better. My 1999 Jeep Cherokee with 4.0 liter (straight six injected farm tractor engine technology) auto with 3" lift (to get over the rocks) get's 22 on the highway so I know its not just being an off road SUV. I am considering buying a SUV that could help me to drive off-road 1/3 of the year and the other 2/3 in the town/city. The rear suspension of the xterra is multi-leaf with solid axle not independent multi-link suspension as the majority of SUV in the market included the Sorento, FJ Cruiser, Kia Borrego etc. Could someone elaborate on this. Why Nissan decided to use a cheap rear suspension in its ... Read More

Having researched Edmunds comparative data and these excellent Xterra Forum postings, we have decided to order a 2008 Xterra OR as soon as they are available. Our local Nissan dealership is the dealer for the Costco auto program, which seems to be a hassle-free and fairly efficient way to deal. Does anyone have any experience, positive or negative, in using this method rather than a more traditional approach? Advice is appreciated. ... Read More
