Review of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

  • With newfound power under the hood, a more refined suspension underneath and more passenger space inside, Nissan addresses all the shortcomings of the previous Xterra without taking away any of the appealing attitude that made it a hit in the first place.

  • Safety
  • Pros

One of the most powerful V6s in the class, above average off-road capability, solid passenger room, innovative cargo features.

  • Cons

Still not what we would call refined on the street, a few instances of low-grade interior materials.

  • What's New for 2005

The Xterra has been fully redesigned for 2005 with a new platform, a more powerful V6 and a more spacious interior.

Vehicle: 2005 Nissan Xterra Off-Road 4WD 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 6M)

I love this truck. I have been driving Explorers since 94. This thing smokes them 10 to 1. Plenty of power and off road it rocks. I go places where some jeeps have trouble. The ride is on par with the explorer. But the motor is way better. Mpg is about the same I avg about 20mpg 60/40 driving hwy/city. No problems of any kind yet.No rattles or squeaks I am at 60000 miles. Time for some new rubber. I just couldn't be happier.

After having a 2000 Nissan Xterra that never ever needed a repair, I purchased the new one in 2005, all two months of them. Now at 21,000- miles, my alternator and idling arm are dead. Go figure. Dealership thought the progressive noise it made was lack of oil! Wrong! New dealership can't explain why it happened. Neither can I or the next dealership I may have to go to,,,probably NOT Nissan!

Not a "car" suv

Vehicle: 2005 Nissan Xterra Off-Road 4WD 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 6M)

If you are looking for a "car" SUV, look at a CRV or RAV4. If you want a real truck that can traverse real off road terrain, tow substantial loads, and has enough power to blow off v-8 powered trucks, and for way less than $30K...no need to look further!

Awesome vehicle

Vehicle: 2005 Nissan Xterra Off-Road 4WD 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 6M)

I bought my XTerra in Apr 2005 and have already put on 35,000 miles on it. It is an awesome vehicle. So far I have not had any problems with it whatsoever. This is a very VERY reliable SUV - does not have too many extras which is how I like it - There are fewer things that can go wrong with it.

Ugly xterra

Vehicle: 2005 Nissan Xterra Off-Road 4WD 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 6M)

my wife and her female friends really like it...the 265 hp v6 performs strong, it's an odd (unattractive) vehicle, cheap plastic interior, the ride reminds me of a mid 70s cj-5 i had years ago, too high price for as cheap as this X is constructed, would not recommend this vehicle.......

Awesome little suv

Vehicle: 2005 Nissan Xterra Off-Road 4WD 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 6M)

My wife and I are really happy about our decision to buy a new 2nd gen. Xterra. We were considering buying a H3, but in comparison to what you get for the price, the X made more sense. Don't get me wrong, the H3 is nice (under-powered though) but it's not worth the extra $10k for it. I would say the fit and finish of our Xterra is as good if not better than the H3. The cabin is quiet when cruising around. Interior noise under acceleration though seems a little loud but hey that's a good thing because it reminds you got a little monster under the hood. The X definitely has power on tap, which was I think the biggest factor in our decision to buy the X.
