I have owned many different 4x4 SUV's (Trailduster, Suburban, Rodeo, Trooper) and have to say my 2002 Nissan Xterra is the best of the bunch. It provides a great balance between off road ability and highway comfort. Towing my boat is painless and my 9'6" longboard fits inside! I have put almost 50,000 miles on mine since without any problems.
Substantial roof rack, manual transmission, auto locking hubs, comfy ride, first aid kit (has come in handy!), In-dash CD changer, high ground clearance, skid plates, fog lights, 5,000 lb towing capacity, great room inside for gear/friends.
Everyone is complaining about the gas mileage. I get 19 mpg on the freeway with the 5-speed transmission.
