What a great little SUV.
Vehicle
2000 Nissan Xterra 4 Dr XE V6 4WD Wagon
Review
My wife and I purchased this Xterra almost 7 years ago (when we had no kids) and it was worth the price. We finally paid it off and it has been a very reliable vehicle. It is very comfortable on long and short trips with the family. A family of 4 will fit comfortably. As I am now finding out, 3 in the back seat is a little too snug. Other than that I think 7 years ago we made a good decision that we still own today with over 81,000 miles on it. Other than one recall from the dealership, we have had no problems at all. In the future we probably would be better off with 3rd row seating. Other than that I would keep it.
Favorite Features
Plenty of room for a family of 4 or smaller! The 4wd works great in the snow or the trails or even fishing excursions.
Suggested Improvements
The plastic bumpers look very old only after 7 years. I wish Nissan were quicker on notifying customers for recall info. I wish it had 3rd row seating. Exhaust system seemed to rust faster than previous vehicles. After 7 years I think the AC is going.

I love my Xterra. It has 100,000 miles and I have only had to change the tires, brakes and a couple belts. Nothing huge considering the mileage.
Favorite Features
It is very reliable. I drive 80 miles a day and I know I can count on my Xterra.
Suggested Improvements
My only suggestion is more head room in the front and more leg room in the back. It is a small SUV and that is what you get.

Great Car
Vehicle
2000 Nissan Xterra 4 Dr SE 4WD Wagon
Review
I found this vehicle very fun to drive and quite capable both on road and off road. I used the car for everything from road trips, to LA commuting, to Rocky Mountain offroading and it did great. The gas mileage left a bit to be desired, but to be fair, mine was lifted with oversized tires. I was recently in a 20+ car pile up that unfortunately totaled my Nissan, but let me tell you, that car crashed incredibly well. My girlfriend and i were both able to walk away from the accident uninjured. The car took several high speed impacts from other vehicles and even a few walls quite softly. We both believe its safety features saved us. It really was an great car both in driving and in crashing...
Favorite Features
Truck based platform, roof rack, large cargo capacity.
Suggested Improvements
The engine makes decent power but it really benefited from the addition of an Airaid intake and a Poweraid throttle body spacer. If you plan on off-roading, i would recommend a 3" Calmini or AC Customs lift and some 32x11.5 BFG's.

I really have enjoyed the car these past 5 years, but it can be a little noisy on the highway. If it could be soundproofed some more it would be great

Suggested Improvements
It's noisy on the highway. If they could control the noise more it would be almost perfect!

We were looking to replace a Jeep CJ when we purchased this SUV. We've really enjoyed it until recently. We've put in $2000 worth of repairs and have now been told that the head gasket has to be replaced - another $2000!!! Ouch! We just paid it off and only has 83,000 miles on it!
Favorite Features
We really like the look and ride. Interior is comfortable. Looked at 2006 and they are very bare and boxy!
Suggested Improvements
Reliability! Not looking to Nissan again. Going back to Toyota!

Hello yes it has been a most reliable car . The ride could be better but 4 wheel drive are stiff rides I have been very pleased with it thus far. I would buy another. I am a mechanic and have done nothing but routine maintanice. It is a very stylish ride from the outside. Over all a nice car
Favorite Features
I like the body style and the bars on the top other than that there is not much to say
Suggested Improvements
Could inprove ride and power which they have improved the power part the new ones have more horse power. But its ok other then that

I have taken my Xterra from where the waves crash on the shore to the top of snowy mountains. I have yet to get stuck and I have had no maintenance issues. It tows it hauls and is nice to just ride in. My favorite places is to take it out on the beach at the Outer Banks of NC and to the drive, drop down the back seats, lay out some blankets and enjoy a good show.
Favorite Features
Roof rack, 4 wheel drive any where you want to go, the running boards, and the lines (the shape of the vehicle).
Suggested Improvements
The things I wish were different; that the driver's seat was more comfortable, that mine had a stronger engine (already corrected in newer models) and that it would get better gas mileage. But 21 mpg isn't bad for a SUV. I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

Still going strong at 115k

Review
This SUV's great. Not anything like JD Power's review. Practical, fun, low maintenance. Just do the maintenance and everything works fine. Still a very tight sounding vehicle 5 years and 100k+ miles later. Not too many vehicles can pull that off.
Favorite Features
Everything you like if you are drawn to the Xterra look.
Suggested Improvements
The usual - more power, goes through front brakes somewhat faster than normal, better turning radius, air dam on roof vibrates on highway (I took mine off). Mechanically, I replaced two Oxygen sensors and a radiator (small leak) - that's it.

If you don't mind driving a rugged SUV, this car rocks. I expected a bumpy ride, as it's built on a truck frame. In my opinion , the bumpiness combined with my 5-speed manual transmission makes my X-Terra very fun to drive.

Engine Issues

Review
I am glad that Nissan no longer uses this V6 engine when they introduced the 2005 model. My engine problems began at 65 to 70k miles. I had to replace the Knock sensor that is located deep inside the block. The dealer wanted $1200 to replace; I used a non-dealer where the cost to repair in the book understates the labor hours. The timing belt won't last for 105K miles; they now recommend every 60k that costs another several hundred dollars. Thank god my exhaust manifolds have held up even though my dealer said they needed to be replaced for $1200 (other mechanics said they were ok.) Nissan uses a "plastic" bolt on the ac compressor sprocket. Mine eventually "popped" off.
Favorite Features
I am using this space for more engine complaints: This sprocket also holds the belt for the radiator fan. I had to replace the water pump. If the water pump is to be replaced, go ahead and have the timing belt replaced; it will save you money.
Suggested Improvements
The engine developed a metallic ringing noise when you accelerated. Adding a washer to tighten the bolt on the AC sprocket eliminated this noise. I have a noise eminating from the dash area when you want to accelerate uphill. You can hear the AC compressor coming on and off now. Back to the shop!
