Test Driver Ratings & Comments

Acceleration commentsThe five-speed automatic transmission upshifted at 6,000 rpm. The V6 feels strong at the top end of its rpm band — above 4,000 rpm. Manually shifting the tranny didn't result in better times, nor did power braking it. Upshifts were crisp and consistent.
Braking ratingAverage
Braking commentsPedal feel was confident with minimal ABS noise or vibration, but there was too much tire squeal — suggesting that the ABS was allowing too much traction loss. This was backed up by long stopping distances. Many modern SUVs don't feel like SUVs when stopping, but this one does. At least fade was minimal.
Handling ratingPoor
Handling commentsGenerally a violent vehicle in the slalom. The body tosses substantially and violently, causing me to whack my skull on the B-pillar on one occasion. The stability control system cuts in violently as well when activated. The quick steering ratio (perhaps too quick) offers potential, but the rest of the vehicl is too tippy and squirrelly at the limit to make any real time in the slalom.
