Test Driver Ratings & Comments
Acceleration commentsDoesn't like pedal overlap and the little bit it does allow becomes a "wash" by the end of the quarter-mile. At wide-open throttle, engine rpm nearly reaches redline by 60 mph and remains there for the rest of the run. Yet, max acceleration is not what Nissan's VQ (engine) + CVT (transmission) does best. Everyday driving is seamless, quiet and responsive.
Braking commentsPretty noticeable dive, but not enough to allow the rear to rotate or even wiggle at all. There's some extra, slightly excessive pedal travel from 10 mph to a stop that doesn't inspire confidence. Overall, however, good stopping power, good fade resistance and good feel.
Handling commentsSkid pad: Plenty of lean and tire howling with ESC "off" (which it ain't really). Throttle begins to trail off as understeer increases. Steering weight doesn't appear to increase much at this low speed, but there is a sense of both how much front tire grip is available and when it goes away. With ESC on, both the throttle closing and brake dabbing keep the Murano on the line. Slalom: With the non-defeat ESC, the slalom becomes a frustrating guessing game of what's permitted on each run -- hard to predict the outcome of various techniques. In general, however, the steering is friction-free, precise and linear in response. Chassis feels more capable than the limits imposed by the stability control system.
