RATING

Finally, a Maxima worthy of the name, price and status at the top of Nissan's sedan range.

DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS

Dynamics

RATING

Both (3.5 S and 3.5 SV) Maximas get the same 3.5L 290-hp V6 and well-sorted continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), now with a DS (Drive/Sport) mode and the manual-gate located on the driver side. The lauded "VQ" engine series makes the Maxima quick and reasonably fuel-efficient (19 city/26 hwy). Opt for the SV model if you prefer a sportier driving dynamic, and optional Sport package if ride comfort is not a priority. Either Maxima is twice as fun as any Camry or Accord. Other than some European cars, only the Mazda6 s Grand Touring compares in terms of a fun-to-drive V6 family sedan.

Comfort

RATING

The Maxima's ride offers a good balance between handling and comfort unless you opt for the 19-inch wheels and Sport package. Road noise fluctuates with wheel/tire choice, as well as, the condition of the road surface. Wind noise is not intrusive. Seat comfort is very good front and rear -- especially with the Premium seats. Keep in mind, however, the two, outboard rear seats are "bucket-style" meaning the center position is not entirely suitable for adults.

Function

RATING

There are several, extensive option packages that can augment the functional qualities of either Maxima (e.g. xenon headlamps, hard drive nav w/real-time traffic, and back-up camera are available). Even the "base" S model is well equipped and offers above-average functionality. Nominal trunk space is 14.2 cu-ft and can be made larger with optional 60/40-split folding rear seats (but not when combined with either the Premium or Sport packages).

Design/Build Quality

RATING

As with all recent Nissan products, the quality of all the interior materials, as well as, the general build quality of the car itself have improved to Infiniti levels. Some "parts-bin" sharing occurs, but Nissan is the winner in this arrangement.

DETAILED PROFILE:

Comfortable Well sculpted, amply padded seats plus a comfy, quiet ride.

Luxurious Start with the SV model and then check the Premium and Tech packages and you've got yourself a budget Infiniti.

High Performer A standard 290-hp version of the Z's motor and summer tires and sport-tuned suspension are available.

Daily Commuter Configured correctly, the Maxima would make a very comfortable and capable commuter car.
