I have a 1998 Nissan Maxima with 146K miles and I'm living in Kansas. When I start my car in the winter early morning for the last few days, the engine is cranking without starting. The engine will crank for few seconds and it will shut off. After 9-10 tries, the engine will start. The battery seems to be fine. After I drive the car for some time and if I start ... Read More
about the rear brake i find after awhile a rust ridge forms around the outside of the brake pads and the rotor. when it rotates the rust ridges then rub on the pads.also the noise that you may hear on the back right may be the metal bracket that is used to tie down a load in the trunk. i put tape on it and i did not hear this noise ... I had a similiar problem with my 99 maxima se. Inside the brake calipers there are a few little clips that put pressure on the brake pads. What happened is that they wore away and now the pads are ratling in the caliper. I went to AutoZone and got the coreect clip kit (ONLY 5.00) and that took care of problem. Hope that helped. ;)
Need your help! I have brought my 1998 Nissan GXE Maxima to both a master mechanic and a well respected Nissan dealership and they cannot resolve my problem. My turning signal do not work because the fuse keeps blowing out. When the fuse is replaced, I drive the car for a day or so and then I hear a clicking sound (sounds like the directional are on; but there not) and ... Read More
I have a 1998 Nissan Altima with the exact same problem. I was wondering if you fixed your problem and which of the three parts required replacing?
Hey, I'm new to this website, but I'm having the same problems with my 2000 nissan maxima that slj930 had (report #1998) re: electronic engine mounts/computer short. To reiterate, a buzzing noise after the engine is turned off, $800 to replace engine mounts, and another $900 if the problem has extended to the ECM. Does anyone remember or know the best way to handle this problem?
in the back right brake, when i drive under 5mph and brake, they make noise. also, there is a rattling sound that can be heard in the car on the back right as well ( i wonder if they are related?) anyone have any ideas as to what this is?
Here's the lengthy letter I'm sending to Nissan and attaching to my JD Power survey. If anyone out there can help I would really appreciate it. I have a 1998 Nissan Maxima. A mechanic did faulty work that caused the transmission to completely deteriorate. The mechanic knows he performed the faulty repair, but will not pay for it. Does anyone have information on the reliability of Nissan Transmissions? This will help me extremely in small claims court. Thanks
It appears that manual transmission vehicles in the US are disappearing fast: Ford Explorer no longer offers manual transmission (did until 2002) Nissan Pathfinder dropped the manual transmission option several years ago Land Rover Discovery dropped the manual option in the late nineties Cannot get a manual on any full size American car or SUV anymore, and often manual transimssion on midsize and compact cars are only available with smaller base ... I hope your 1998 SE is holding up as well as my 1995 SE has (knock on wood). I think "extreme" is an apt way of describing the direction Nissan has taken with vehicle / interior design. Again, not to age myself, but back in 1995, the Maxima fit nicely on the continuum between less expensive cars like the Accord and Camry and the more expensive BMW and Mercedes offerings. And ... Does anyone know if there is any way to keep the power antenna on the 1998 nissan maxima to stay up? It gets very annoying for it to always go up and down.
I can somewhat sympathize, but I also think you need to be realistic. You didn't say what you were asking for the car, but what would you pay for a 3+ year old car with 65k miles when a brand new Maxima SE can be had for $25k or less? And, by the way, the difference in performance with the 255 hp 6-speed 2002/3 is significant. I have a 1995 SE ... Read More
Hi all, I have been in the Passat newsgroup for about 3 months getting ready to purchase a 2002 Passat GLX V6 w/4motion. I was leaving a resturant the other day and saw the Nissan Maxima 2003. I had to check it out. Now that I have seen 2003 and the Passat 2002, I am soooo stuck. Not sure which to go with. I currently own a 1998 Maxima. I never ... Read More
NMCHOP, First of all $14995 is way too much for a 1998 Nissan Maxima SE. If you want to find out the TMV (true market value), check the TMV value for used cars at the Edmunds site. Second, The Nissan Maxima is a great car and is way better then the Dodge Stratus by a long shot! I have a 1999 SE 5 speed with 45K miles and it hasnt given ... Read More
I'm considering trading "down" but really up to a Nissan maxima (1998 SE)...it's got the Bose and sunroof, cloth seats (i like that since I live in the desert and it's 100-degrees every day). It's dark green with a little bit of sun damage around the fake wood where the dash goes around the radio (very minor, the plastic covering is coming up a little, it happens out here). I got ... I would recommend you get a full demonstration of the Maxima navigation system before you decide to order one. I myself have not seen the Maxima system. However, I have seen several others and they vary greatly in ... Read More
I have had two "Nissans" ("Datsun 280-ZX" and "300-ZX") . I was extremely happy with both cars, and I can tell you that "Nissan" IS a great company! Do you know that they issued a "Recall" for my 1995 "300-ZX" for a small problem with the "Fuel Injectors" (Hardly even noticable!) in 1996 (OVER 10 YEARS LATER!)! They replaced all of the "Fuel Injectors" at a cost of over $700.00 per ... Read More
Stopped by a Nissan dealer yesterday and was told by the sales manager that the 2002 Maxima will be out in September with both a standard 260hp V-6 and an optional 300 hp V-8 available. This was the first I have heard of the V-8 being offered as an option. The particular dealership is not the most professional, so I'm not sure if this is reliable news or not. Unfortunately, it ... I just purchased a 1998 Nissan Maxima SE. Is it worth it to get the Nissan extended warranty at $1690 for a 7year/100,0000 mild/ 0 deductible policy.
I called the Nissan dealership (where I purchased my Maxima brand new) when I discovered a rack seal leak at 37,450 miles last month. The dealership told me sorry, I am "expired" which I thought was quite rude. I then called Nissan Consumer Affairs and was told that they would not extend their warranty to cover this. My say on this? A rack seal shouldn't be leaking now or at any ... Read More
My Nissan Maxima GLE is having difficulties starting first thing in the morning. I just replaced the battery last month when it went completely dead. I thought this was the problem, but now it is trying not to start in the morning again. Could it be the alternator? This car has been riddled with problems for being only 3 years with 38,000 miles.
Ever since I bought my Maxima new in Aug. of '98, it has never seemed to drive right. It has always pulled to one side or the other when I take my hands off the wheel. I've had the alignment done several times and the tires rotated but nothing seems to get it just right. Recently, I rotated the tires as specified in the owners manual. This caused it to pull ... At 37,000 miles, I noticed a drip under my car. I was told it was a seal leak on the rack (rack and pinion). Of course, this just missed getting fixed under the 36,000 warranty, even though it is something that shouldn't occur on such a young car. Has anyone else experienced this?
Our family has a 1998 Maxima SE with black paint. I have noticed that even the slighted door ding results in the black paint coming off and the white primer being exposed.
