I have a 1996 Nissan Maxima. It is an automatic transmission. It is a very good car, but sometimes when I drive it maybe 10 miles and then go to the store or somewhere for 10 minutes I come out and my car will not crank. It turns over so it isn't the battery. It also smells like gas very bad and I have white smoke coming out of the mufflers. ... Read More
Hi, My stepson has the 1996 Nissan Maxima from .... Every major artery has been changed in order to get the car crank and turn over. All sensors replaced, fuel pump, alternator, starter, coils, plugs...you name it. We just changed the ECM Computer...The car ran great for four hours then suddenly decided not to start. We spoke to the mechanic and he says that he thinks the plugs are fouled with ... Read More

Hi, I have a 1996 Nissan Maxima that has 107,000 miles and was running great! Love this car. I was hit in January on the left front fender and both air bags went off and the insurance company totalled it. I had just put $3900. to keep it running great. I purchased the car back from the insurance company and would like your recommendations on how I should sell it. NJ ... Read More
I recently got a 1996 nissan maxima base model from my dad. It does not have the bose system. It is the maxima with the tape and am/fm player. I bought a subwoofer and I have an amp at home and the head unit. My cousin is going to be hooking everything up but he said I need things like wiring "taps" and wiring kits and an adapter. Can someone please ... Read More
I distinctly remember that the 1995 Nissan Maxima went head on head and matched the 328i in various automotive magazine comparisons, which is partly why at least a couple gave it COTY award. I test drove it against the 328i myself and concluded that it was damn competitive in performance, with better back seat room and a $7k+ lower price tag. Nissan didn't have to toot its own horn with a ... Read More

On the lower dash of my car underneath the lever to pop my hood there are fuses. There has been no cover on them since the day I got the car, and I am now having someone look at my car and they have requested that I find something on-line that describes what the fuses are. Again, I know nothing about cars so my apologies if I am making no sense. ... Read More
I have a 1996 Nissan Maxima that won't start. When I put the key in the ignition and turn it all the lights come on and the stereo comes on, but when I turn the key further to start the car nothing happens. It doesn't even make any kind if noise or clicking or anything. I'm a single mom who knows nothing about cars, and I'm having to do this on ... Read More
I bought my 1996 Maxima brand new in October of that year. My previous car, a 1990 Maxima, was totaled and we needed a new car. I was very impressed with the '90 so my wife and I opted to look at the new cars and bought this one. For the next 10 years we were very satisfied with and had no maintenance issues other than oil changes and filter changes ... Read More
Based on my experience with my '97 Maxima SE 5 speed, it can be some of the 4 things below:: 1. Ball joints are trashed. This would also make the car twitchy and unstable, and if not repaired on time, they start to rattle and eventually fall off, taking a wheel with them. A mechanic can check this in 5 minutes, once the car is lifted. 2. Sway bar links are ... Read More
I have a 1996 Nissan Maxima. I was in an accident and the other car hit my rear driver side tire. The axle looks bent. Does anyone know how they repair and at what it would cost? I searched repair but did not see anything similar. Thanks
I have 1996/Nissan Maxima/GLE/V6/3.0 Automatic Transmission/100K mileage. I've got exactly the same problem and two, count 'em, TWO Nissan dealerships said they could find nothing and could't reproduce the problem. One even kept him for two days so they could test the transmission cold. Overall, I agree with the comments here that the quality is slipping on the Maxima. My 1996 was smoother, quieter, had higher low-end torque and just seemed to be a better-engineered product. :P
Where can I get a Factory Service Manual for my 1996 Maxima? What would be the price range? Is there any place to get this besides Nissan?
it will most likely be a o2 sensor or the vent contol valve
You might be able to figure it out by checking out the specs of each model from this page: http://www.edmunds.com/used/1996/nissan/maxima/index.html Meanwhile, someone might come along who knows from what you've said here.
If you consider a component that lasts over 100,000 miles to be disposable, I guess so. http://a332.g.akamai.net/f/332/936/12h/www.edmunds.com/media/townhall/webxicons/emotorcons- /emo_smiley.gif smile
The majority of the times when my CEL would come on, it was an 02 sensor, although one of the times it was BOTH an O2 sensor and a knock sensor. The 02 sensors on these cars are indeed disposible, it would seem. Good luck.
The "Check" light for emissions just came on. I have a 1996 Maxima 3.0 with 105,000 miles. Anyone venture to guess what the problem might be before I take it to the mechanic? I would at least like to know what the possibilities are before I enter the dance...
Fuel Filter Nissan Maxima 1993-1998 Repair Guide The fuel filter is located in the engine compartment, next to the power brake booster. Does anyone with a 1996 Nissan Maxima V6 or knows a little about this car know where the fuel filter located(if it's inside the fuel tank or outside of it and etc.)? I currently drive a 1996 Intrepid, and have never owned a ... Read More
I have a 1996 Maxima SE. My engine light has been on for a few days so I took it to the dealer to have checked out. Outcome is both front 02 sensors are faulty (codes P0150 and P0130). I know from reading postings on 02 sensors, to replace with Bosch, not Nissan. Is replacing the 02 sensors something that I would be able to do?
I'm new to this forum as I am about to buy a 1996 Maxima SE with 77k miles on it. But I have to say I'm getting a little worried by the number of horror stories of people having sensors/wiring harnesses etc.. go bad with rather costly repairs, even on rather new and well-maintained vehicles. There don't seem to be nearly as many maintenance & repair posts from other cars I ... Read More

I have had two "Nissans" ("Datsun 280-ZX" and "300-ZX") . I was extremely happy with both cars, and I can tell you that "Nissan" IS a great company! Do you know that they issued a "Recall" for my 1995 "300-ZX" for a small problem with the "Fuel Injectors" (Hardly even noticable!) in 1996 (OVER 10 YEARS LATER!)! They replaced all of the "Fuel Injectors" at a cost of over $700.00 per ... Read More
My friends got a 1992 Nissan Maxima. His manual and everything all just say 1992 Nissan Maxima. They don't say if its a GXE GLS SE Or whatever. I want to know this because I want to know how fast his car is. I own a 1996 Toyota Avalon XLS. Do you think I could beat him?
Hello all, I am seriously considering purchasing a used 1996 Maxima GLE fully-loaded. It is in great shape and only have 50,000 km on it! Are there any suggestions on things I should look out for when I test drive it? Any known problems with the 1996 model? Any advice in general? What is everyone's opinion of the 1996 Maxima. Thanks for your help. I really appreciate any feedback.
I love my Maxima. I think anyone who owns one understands me. I own a 1996 GXE and I recently started reading tuning magazines. A few days ago, I read about a 240SX that had swapped its engine with the Nissan Silvia. That's incredible. So, with that in mind, I was wondering if it is possible for a Nissan Skyline engine to fit into my hood because I really desire Nizmo ... Read More
