I find it interesting that you would prefer a "real" automatic transmission to the Maxima's CVT. I thought the most favorable impressions of the CVT came from those that view it as better/smoother than a slushbox automatic. With a gun to my head, even I'd probably take the CVT over Nissan's previous automatic transmssions. Although if and when I ever get tired of shifting, hopefully whatever I opt for will have ... In the Jan 2009 issue of Motor Trend, the professional testers report a 5.9 second 0-60 MPH time with the new Max, and ¼ mile time of 14.4 98.6 MPH. www.theautochannel.com reported a 0-60 MPH time for the1997 Maxima at 7.5 seconds, and ¼ mile time of 17.0 84 MPH I would be careful about comparing acceleration times from different sources. They all have their own testing methods. Motor Trend, if ... Read More

"Would i be better off with a Lexus ir an Acura TL??" That depends upon what you want and, as kyleknicks noted, your budget. I went with a 2004 Acura TL 6-speed after having a great 150k mile experience with a 1995 Maxima SE 5-speed. I could comfortably afford the price difference in 2004, and found the TL 6-speed to be both more refined and better performing / sportier feeling. Being ... Read More

  • Manual Transmission Availability

Written by: dklanecky on Jul 20, 2004 5:53:48 AM

IMO, Nissan dealers rarely order any manual transmissions in the Maxima, regardless of geographic location. The only new ones I've seen on a dealer's lot since 1994, (when I started following the Max)were orders for customers who backed out of the one they ordered after driving the vehicle when it arrived. Since the dealers never have available any for test drives, they end up having to leave the buyer an "out" ... Read More

It is not a vehicle defect. Once you leave the auto Hvac setting, the system has been engineered to allow you complete control, including where the air is directed and the fan speed. Auto means the car runs everything, you just choose the temp. Anything other than manual, your responsible for choosing the way you want it to operate. Nissan has had virtually the exact same auto Hvac system in production ... Read More

I suspect that consumers are reacting to Nissan's past pricing policies / strategy. Name one new model by Nissan or Infiniti that hasn't had incentives or significant discounting within 6 months or less of introduction. I, on the other hand, was pleased to get a Honda S2000 for $880 under MSRP a full 2 years after the vehicle was introduced. And I almost fell off my chair when a neighbor brought ... Read More

"All of the Japanese imports are good reliable cars"? That is not my personal reality. I had an early Acura Integra that took me to the cleaners after about 80k miles. But that my one bad experience does not make Acura a bad brand. In my research back in 1994 before buying my Maxima, I concluded that the Maxima (with its V6) was equal in quality and reliability to the Toyota ... Read More

Speedracer3, History showed that governments and companies don't change their policies for decades. From my point of view the 1997 Maxima I owned was not a different car from what the Maxima is today. I don't care they made them more powerful. What matters to me is the feeling of perfection. The feeling I had with my 1994 and 2001 Accords was that the car was glued to ground at any ... Read More

ramped, I was directed to the Maxima back in 1994 (1995 model) by a friend who had a 1989 SE 5-speed and loved it. He still has it, but with 130k miles on his and 135k miles on my 1995, he has had quite a few more repairs than me. Brakes, rotors, transmission, etc. I'm not sure the 1995-1999 model was built better, rather the difference is probably more related to ... Read More

  • exby - build location

    Written by: habitat1 on Dec 3, 2002 11:46:12 AM

I think build location is more important than you think. None of the foreign manufacturers I'm aware of haven't had initial quality problems with models that they have tried to build in the US. Back in 1994, when I bought a Japanese made 1995 Maxima SE, Honda and Toyota were still having fit and finish and some mechanical problems with their US built Accords and Camrys. It wasn't devastating to either ... Read More

  • removing moulding adhesive from 1994 GXE

I've lived long enough with the "corroded" side mouldings on my 1994 Maxima GXE. I purchased new already painted mouldings from Tustin Nissan and removed the old "fall out" damaged ones. Any suggestions on the removal of the black foam adhesive tape and glue. I tried WD-40 and citrus based solvents with no luck. Has anyone ever heard of Nissan taking responsibility for this quality issue ?

    Written by: habitat1 on Aug 26, 2002 4:31:51 AM

Back when I bought a 1995 Maxima SE in September 1994, the automotive press gave the car high accolades but jumped all over the rear end design. Which to me, even 8 years later, is not all that bad looking. A little "heavy", but not that much different than the 5-series. The rest of the car was preety clean and uncluttered, including the body color modling and "shadowline" window trim. Now, ... Read More

  • Road & Track vs. Motortrend vs. Car and Driver

    Written by: habitat1 on Jan 23, 2002 7:49:14 PM

Montmax: I wouldn't advise cross comparing Motortrend and Road and Track performance test results. Motortrend seems to consistently quote faster times and higher skidpad ratings. Example - On the S2000, Road & Track's numbers are 0-60 in 5.5 seconds, 1/4 mile in 14.1 and 0.90g skidpad. Motortrends are 5.2 seconds, 13.8 seconds and 0.96 g's respectively. I suspect that Road and Track is a little more reasonable in their testing procedures. ... Read More

Here are my responses to your questions: Driving comfort for 200-500 miles a day: good. Seats in the 95 SE offered slightly better bolstering and adjustments than the GXE.
