I get a code 51 Replaced injectors When warm, right as closed loop, sets code. Tach will fluctuate, work normal, go dead intermittently. Data shows fuel pump circuit fault and Air Flow Sensor fault intermittently. When (rich/lean) Compensation goes lean, engine light illuminates, when it goes rich, light goes off. When tach is dead, no engine light at all. Always code 51. I cleaned Air Flow Sensor, all grounds and batt. ... Read More

I have a 1992 Nissan Maxima. My battery kept dying, so I replaced it. I then replaced the alternator, because the battery still kept dying. Now, the radio if coming off and on, the windows are rolling down by themselves, and the clock won't keep the time. I am assuming electrical, but can't afford to continue guessing. Please give me some ideas!!!

"If you don' (sic) think that car has some torque steer issues then I would respectfully suggest that you may not know what it is." Captain, to paraphrase Forrest Gump: I may not be an intelligent man, but I do know what torque steer is. Which is why, if you re-read my original post, I mentioned my wife's CR-V specifically to provide a comparative context for my evaluation of torque steer ... Read More

Sir, as chance would have it, I own the 190-horsepower 1992 Nissan Maxima well, then, you have a great car, I got almost 300k on mine before the tranny cratered at which point the $3500.00 to fix the tranny was more than the car was worth. The tranny failure BTW probably due to my own neglect. However, if you don' think that car has some torque steer issues then I would ... Read More

Two points, Captain: 1) After reading your post #5873 that basically blames the current Maxima's torque steer on every factor except solar flares, I was about to point out what you'd missed -- until you basically contradicted the implications of your post #5873 in post #5875, by acknowledging that the current Altima owes some of its torque steer reduction to that improved halfshaft geometry. That's the real reason why the current ... Read More

I have a problem with my nissan maxima, and can't find anyone that can fix it. When you are driving along it will sputter, like it's not getting fuel or something like that, it will do it once or maybe several times then runs fine, changed fuel filter, pump, computer,ECCS, still the same problem, one shop changed all the grounds. Same shop wants me to rent a wire from nissan, which the nissan ... Read More

The older Altimas were more of a match for the pre-1992 compact size Camry. The Cressida and Maxima were rivals until the Cressida was dropped. Then there was overlap with Camry V6, Avalon, and Maxima pricing. The current Altima was almost going to be called the Maxima, but Nissan reconsidered, phew!

You both are singing a song that Nissan should have expected after its ill-advised decision to move the Maxima "upscale." This car has regrettably morphed from a powerful, tossable and affordable family sports sedan that was an easy choice for an enthusiast on a budget into a rather ungainly and low-rent entry-luxo wannabe. It is not even close to a bang-for-the-buck value anymore. I simply don't understand how Nissan expects this ... Read More

Find out which 1992 maxima your friend has. From 1992 through 1994 Nissan offered two different engines in the maxima. The GXE model (160 HP) uses a timing belt which needs changing every 60k miles. The SE model had a different engine (190 HP) which uses a chain. Goodluck

When I take a short trip to the store and then start up the my car,it sounds like a diesl. The noise speeds up when you push the gas and slows down. This only happens on small trips. I do not think its a piston rod.maybe lifters or cam type of thing.

I haven't gone to the dealer either! I think if it's something under warranty that's broken, then any authorized Nissan dealer should take care of it. I didn't feel any vibration on my brother's 1992 Mazda 929 (133,000 miles), nor on my previous 1995 Mazda Millenia-S (80,000 miles). Even though Maxima is not a Lexus there shouldn't be any steering wheel vibration coming from one of the "world's best top 10 ... Read More

I'm a newbie. Please help me~ I got a 1992 maxima(97Kmiles) a month ago. I've paid $1000 to repair it within a month. I still feel a side to side wobble in the steering wheel at low speed, though it runs pretty good before repair. The problem is initiated by CV-boots replacement and left CV-joint rebuilt in a vietnamese workshop. The left lower-ball-joint is found damaged after this service. Then I ... Read More
