This rating has been carried forward from a prior year because the newer model has no substantial differences.

In a dwindling segment, the 2013 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X is one of only a couple of off-road-ready small pickups. As such, it's easy to overlook its odd handling, sub-par braking, wind/road noise and lackluster interior. As a toy for adventurous souls, this is an excellent bet. For everyone else, maybe not.

Performance An interesting mix here, for sure. The Frontier Pro-4X sacrifices some on-road driveability for off-road performance and for the right buyer, that's a worthwhile trade.
Acceleration
B
With a big, 261-horsepower 4.0-liter V6, the Frontier accelerates quickly, especially from 0-30. 0-60 takes 8.2 seconds, which feels fast in a truck this size.
Braking
C
Stopping from 60 takes a lengthy 134 feet thanks to big, off-road-type tires. While effective enough, tons of dive and a spongy brake pedal don't instill confidence in any situation.
Steering
B
The Frontier Pro-4x has heavy, slow steering that is cumbersome in tight situations, but resists kickback in rough conditions. Tracks true and is easy to control at freeway speeds.
Handling
C
On-road handling is sub par. The heavy steering doesn't return quickly, there's a ton of understeer and truly intrusive stability control. Still, it's stable and easy to control.
Driveability
C
Intrusive stability control and a brake-differential make this truck akward to drive at times and can overheat the brakes. Throttle is a bit touchy, but otherwise this is a fun toy.
Towing
B
With the right options and hitch, the Frontier can tow up to 5,000 pounds, enough for dirt bikes or a small boat.
Off-Road
A
The Pro-4X has real power, real 4wd, 8.9-inches of ground clearance and Bilstein shocks; it's seriously fun off-road, where it's also highly capable.

Comfort The Frontier Pro-4X has a surprisingly plush, controlled ride that is suitable for nearly all surfaces. Points are deducted for massive wind noise and seats that lack support.
Seating Comfort

Front seats are short in the thighs and lack support, and there's a lack of adjustability. The rear seats are tight, but no more so than expected from a truck this size.
Ride Comfort
A
The ride here is surprisingly good. Well controlled and sophisticated even. There are no extraneous movements or truck bounciness.
Quietness
C
There's nothing quiet about this truck. Not only are the tires loud, but there's plenty of wind noise from the roof racks, side-view mirrors and windshield.

Interior Functional is the best word to describe the Frontier. It's overdue for an interior overhaul, but things still work acceptably well.
Ergonomics
C
Stalks and buttons are well placed, easy to use and clearly marked. They are, however, hollow-feeling and don't always provide positive tactile feedback.
Ingress/Egress
C
The optional step-rails are narrow and actually make hopping up into the Pro-4X more of a challenge. The doors have a shallow opening and getting in/out requires some hip flexibility.
Space/Room
B
Tons of interior space and headroom for the front passengers. Legroom is a little light for the driver and the steering wheel's reach limits it further.
Visibility
B
Great sightlines all around and the rear-view camera just makes it better. Easy to park anywhere without hitting curbs/walls.
Cargo/Storage
A
While the Frontier only has a 5-foot bed, that bed has an awesome flip-out tailgate extender and super slick adjustable tie-down cleats. Built for fun and work.

Value There are some tradeoffs with the 2013 Frontier Pro-4X, namely interior quality, mediocre fuel economy and noise. But if you know what you're getting into, this truck represents a great value for what it can do.
Build Quality (vs. $)

The interior isn't stylish or full of soft-touch materials, but everything feels solid and built to last. There wasn't a rattle or shake to be found, and we drove it hard.
Features(vs. $)

What's considered a feature varies here. For about $30,000 you get a truck that can run through the desert over rocks and shrubs without blinking. A Ford Raptor costs $14,000 more.

With an as-tested price of $35,645, this 2013 Frontier is loaded with touchscreen nav, all the off-road goodies, a bed extender, Bluetooth and a five-speed automatic.

The EPA rates the 2013 Frontier Pro-4X at 17 mpg combined (15 city/21 highway). On our highway-heavy Edmunds Test loop we averaged 18.7 mpg.

It's big and slightly silly, but the Pro-4X can clear almost anything in its way. No more avoiding dips, speed bumps or potholes. But the real fun starts where the pavement stops.
Personality
A
One of only a few trucks available for this mission, the Pro-4X occupies a niche slot in the market and isn't afraid to scream that to the world.
