EDITORS' RATINGS OVERALL SCORE:

Overall

RATING

Above average in virtually every category, the Altima is truly a dynamic hybrid.

DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS

Dynamics

RATING

Fuel economy is outstanding. Under ideal conditions, we were able to exceed 40 mpg. More random conditions still earn high 30s. Acceleration is surprisingly strong and shifts (and transitions to e-mode) are smooth. But the low rolling resistance tires lack grip, which puts a damper on handling and braking.

Comfort

RATING

The ride is just a tad firmer than the class leaders, but noise levels are low. Driving position and roominess are good.

Function

RATING

Controls and gauges are well-configured and easy to use. The big drawback to the Altima hybrid is a smallish trunk compounded by the lack of a pass-through. The similar Camry hybrid maintains such a pass-through.

Design/Build Quality

RATING

The Altima hybrid looks like any other Altima -- which is a good thing. The interior is eye-pleasing and apparent assembly quality is good.

DETAILED PROFILE:

Fuel Efficient This is a real "full" hybrid that can run on electric-only mode in city traffic situations. Fuel economy nearing (and sometimes exceeding) 40 mpg was observed.

Daily Commuter The Altima hybrid is a full-featured automobile. Great mileage and a host of features make the Altima hybrid an excellent daily driver.

Economical Transportation While the initial cost of an Altima Hybrid is higher than a standard Altima, its still within reach for many. Day-to-day operating costs are low.

Comfortable A true midsize family sedan, the Altima has plenty of room and provides the usual range of amenities.
